Here is an idea; call the local dealer and get a new key. The serial number of the auto should help you do this.

Replacing an ignition switch is not something the average car owner should do. Making any number of mistakes will cause loss of control while driving, damage to linkage. If for any reason the steering wheel needs to be removed on a car that has an airbag, injury or death can result. This should only be done by someone with experience with this kind of work.

Cirrus, Stratus, Sebring Convertible and Breeze CAUTION
The Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system must be disarmed before working around the steering column. Failure to do so may cause accidental deployment of the air bags, resulting in unnecessary SIR system repairs and/or personal injury.

  1. Disarm the air bag system, as described in Scetion 6.
  2. Remove the upper steering column shroud.
  3. Pull down the lower steering column shroud enough to access the lock cylinder retaining tab.
  4. Turn the ignition key to the RUN position.
  5. Insert a small prying tool into the tab access hole and depress the tab. Fig. 1: Depress the retaining tab and remove the lock cylinder husband lost key to car and I need to know how I - 90908g36.gif

  6. Pull the ignition lock cylinder from the steering column. To install:
  7. With the ignition key in the lock cylinder, turn the key to the RUN position. Depress the lock cylinder retaining tab. Fig. 2: The shaft at the end of the ignition lock cylinder lines up to the socket at the end of the lock cylinder housing

  8. The shaft at the end of the ignition lock cylinder lines up to the socket at the end of the lock cylinder housing. The socket must be in the RUN position for the socket and lock cylinder to line up.
  9. Line up the lock cylinder to the grooves in the lock cylinder housing. Insert the ignition lock cylinder into the housing until the retaining tab sticks through the opening in the housing.
  10. Lightly pull on the ignition lock to make sure it has engaged the retaining tab.
  11. Turn the key to the OFF position. Remove the ignition key.
  12. Install the steering column covers.
  13. Arm the air bag system, as described in Section 6.

Replace ignition key lost key

I replaced the ignition on my truck. There should be a plastic shroud on the bottom of the steering column. Locate the screws and remove it. Then see if there is a small hole that a small diameter screwdriver can fit into. This should allow the ignition switch to be removed.

it would be cheaper to have a locksmith make a key to fit your old ignition lock. I dont know why you didnt do that, before ordering a lock cylinder. Nothing on a MB is cheap. the key is the cheapest thing there is.

Lost keys... cheaper to replace ignition than to order keys... cant remove tumbler assymbly.. 98 honda civic

It might pay you to call a locksmith. Good ones know how to get into cars and they usually know how to get the codes needed to cut you a new key. That might cost you about $15 depending versus all the hassle for you.

My '99 Passat had been operating with no problems until two days ago when we tried to turn the key in the ignition to start the vehicle. Not only did the key not turn, but it seemed that steering wheel...

Your steering wheel is locked in place. You need to put the key into the ignition, then turn the steering wheel more towards the way it is already turned and try turning the key then in the ignition. The steering wheel should move ever so slightly and it should free up the ignition. Let me know how this turns out.

Lost keys and need to replace them. I need to

whether there's a chip( you mean an integrated electronic?) stuck inside the key drum, you will still need to change them all if you lost your key.
most difficukt part is accessing the ignition drum; taking it out is easy when you get there. you will also need to change the door and trunk keys as well.
You will definitely need some elbow grease if you intend to do it yourself( it is not impossible, but it is complicated accessing the locks- removing panels etc; especially in a luxury car)

Lost keys

Why are you taking out the old one. Check with any good locksmith. If your door key fits the ignition, you can easily remove a door lock cylinder and the locksmith can make you a new key!!! I'm pretty sure to remove your lock you need to turn it with the key in it (but you don't have one)
