My 91K mile, 2005 Audi A4 3.0, Auto Trans, recently stated shifting into 3rd and 5th gear really hard, this happens on the up and down shift into 3rd and 5 only. Audi service department is not 100% sure of the problem but they want to do a $1500 fluid change as a possible solution. Of course if this doesn't fix the problem, Ill still owe and even more $ to continue to troubleshoot. . Anyone experience this before?

I would first check the level. If it is good then do a regular fluid/filter change. Do NOT do a flush. Just a regular change.

If it works well in all other gears and the car runs well and there is not check wngine light. Then it is probable a early sign of Tran issues. So the fluid change is about all you can do without major work needed.

Get the transmission scanned at the dealership. If it has incorrect gear ratio code stored, it needs a transmission. Only the torque convertor or valve body can be replaced for any repairs at the dealership, so it needs to be diagnosed correctly. Any authorized ZF transmission repair shop can also repair them, more than the Audi dealerships can, so thats another alternative.

For Diesel and also for Otto engines on 2004 Audi A4, this rpm sensor (impulse sender - crankshaft) is placed on the bottom left back side of the cylinder block. Please Rate my Response! Thanks!

you may not need a transmission replacement, just try replacing the sensor of the transmission, it may help

Tranny could be bad or the switch that indicates position not only to the start circuit and the backup lights. and allows the car to be started in neutral. whis swich can bind and may need replaced as it when removed should turn with little or no resistance
