The hatch door latch on my 2005 PT Cruiser works sometimes and other times only with the key. The problem didn't start until the soft pad that covers the latch started coming loose.

'struck' you mean something banged it? or more likely 'stuck', won't move?

The door lock motor, (piston),needs to be replaced on the rear hatch door.

Remove the inner hatch trim panel and manually trip the hatch latch.

Won't open with the key ? Do all the other doors lock an unlock ? You have to understand the electronics involved , you have a remote keyless entry module an all switches are an input to the (RKEM) , an from the voltage input it knows what door to open or unlock or lock . First you would need a wiring diagram to test the circuit an you need to pull the inside panel off the rear hatch to get at the motor to see if the power is getting to it. Can be a very time consuming job. try unlocking it while its open sometimes they get jammed up by trying to close them and the latch will get hung up in the closed position if you take the key and hold it in the unlock position (don't release ) and then try to manuver the metal latching part it will pop loose ,doors are famous for this !

This car is 15 years old. Personally, I have never heard of a vehicle that would do that. Try to find another vehicle that is newer. Nobody wants to get another vehicle, but it would be better than putting up with this problem.

Remove the relays one by one to find witch one is operating the alarm.You can leave this out untill you have the problem solved.

Hey I happen to have the same car with the same problem. I ended up taking the inner cover off the hatch and replacing the latch itself. Did this by pulling the cover off far enough I could see the linkage and then pushed the arm on the latch itself to make it open, put a new one on and called it good. b Hope this helps.
