How do you re-install the rain sensing rearview mirror in a 2005 Touareg? The windshield installer did not use the correct glue so the metal base came loose and the entire mirror came off. I have been able to re-glue it but can't figure out how to remount the sensor and the mirror base unit. The metal spring clip seems too tight.

If in doubt ring the windshield company and explain the problem and ask them to come back and do the refit under warranty as getting it wrong will be costly.

SOURCE: The rearview mirror on my 1995 Eurovan fell off

Not familiar with the Eurovan, but in general there are two ways they are held on. 1) a small set screw, Hex drive or 2) how do I describe it... a spring that wedges against the button...

set screw is obvious, unsrew it.

spring you have to insert something of the correct size in the hole and then remove the button... first time I did one of these I just used excessive force and got it out... kinda bent things up a bit....

Peace,

It usually takes a very small allen wrench to loosen the small set screw.

Rearview mirror fell off. how do i remove the metal plate from the mirror to reglue

It may be held on by small set screw. (Allen wrench type) Or it just pops on and off, with effort.
To pop it off, hold the mirror as it would normally sit, and with that position in mind, you want to slide the metal plate down and out of the mirror clip, and you may have to pry on it a bit to get it started.

After you have reattached the plate to the windshield, you will have to apply almost the same force to clip the mirror back on.

Tips: Mark the location of the metal plate with a piece of tape on the outside of the windshield.
Make sure you clean the old glue off both the plate and windshield. Do not scratch metal plate.
Make sure you glue the plate on correctly. Do a trial fit on the mirror just prior to glueing.

To repair a displaced rear view mirror. Does the flat base needs a glue? Does the mirror detaches from the metal base? If so, how do I detach it. Please help

mirror is screwed to metal plate w/screw or allen wrench. Glue go to metal plate then to windshield. Let it sit overnight or longer, then attach mirror. NOTE::: MAKE SURE THE METAL PAD IS GLUED IN CORRECT DIRECTION - UPSIDE DOWN DOES NOT WORK - (trust me I know - I did it)

How does the rearview mirror fit back onto the windshield?

Just about every rearview mirror is now attached to the windshield with a special glue. Normally there is a metal piece that the mirror stem actually attaches too. To fix this yourself, you want to do is visit a local auto parts store and pickup a kit to reattach the metal piece to the windshield. Do not try super glue, it will not hold. Follow the directions on the kit for an easy repair.

Replacing the rear view mirror on a Ford Explorer is easy. The only obstacle you might encounter is fear of breaking the glued metal plate off the windshield. Do not sweat it. You can buy glues at the auto parts store to reattach the mirror to the windshield (Difficulty: Moderately Easy).

Instructions:
  1. Tap gently at the base of the mirror where it slides on over the metal plate glued to the windshield and pull upward. Some rear view mirrors have a small Allen screw that tightens the base of the rear view mirror to the metal plate. Disconnect the electrical plugs if your rear view mirror has them.
  2. Pull the rear view mirror clear of the metal plate. Clean around the metal plate glued to the windshield. If the metal plate has come off because of harsh weather or from hammering too hard at it, reattach it with glue designed for this job.
  3. Clean the area where you will be attaching the metal plate on the windshield. Apply the glue evenly on the surface of the metal plate that will go against the window. Be sure to clean and scrape off all the old glue before applying the new glue. Gently push the metal plate against the windshield in the spot you wanted it and hold tight for five minutes.
  4. Wait a day before putting the base of the mirror or replacement rear view mirror onto the metal plate. Do not force the base over the plate. Forcing it will likely dislodge it again. Press firmly until it will not slide along the grooves of the metal plate. Reconnect your electrical plugs and tighten the Allen screw if your new mirror has one. Adjust the mirror according to your safe viewing preference

Hope help with this (remember rated this help). Good luck.

How replace mirror on windscreen?

This happens a lot. There are several brands of adhesives sold at autoparts stores just for rearview mirrors. You should see an outline of the glue on the inside. Take some tape on the outside and mark where the glue is. Then use a razorblade and the solvent in the repair kit and clean the inside. The mirror comes out of the holder with an allen wrench. Follow the instructions in the kit and press the mount to the windshield. Hold it there at least 3 minutes. Wait for it to dry per instructions. Then add the mirror and lightly tighten the mirror to the base. I like the kits which have 2 parts of glue. On my car I let the excess glue stay on the window.

Custom Rear view mirror

Hiya...ALL factory-installed rearview mirrors are installed with different wires due to options.
About 6 different rearview mirrors are installed with those options such as On-Star, light, compass, and those features which use different wires....THIS CANNOT be modified with different rearview mirror....**for example, the Equinox owner attempt to pull out a factory-installed base rearview mirror and put in different one that has compass/temperature built into the rearview mirror**

However, the wires are located inside the front headliner which requires removing the sunvisor (and possible removal of interior plastic trim part at the left/right ends of the windshield) prior to pull the headliner down, and a small metal philips or torx screw is used to secure the rearview mirror onto the bracket glued to the windshield.

The best solution is to leave the original factory-installed rearview mirror in place.
