Try your local parts store. Most sell an a/c deodorizer that you spray through the system. Most work pretty well providing nothing has crawled in there and died (mouse etc).

I have the same problem 2000 jeep lerado

  • Anonymous Sep 16, 2010

As it turns out - it was a slight hole in the heater core area (behind the glove box). The entire dash had to be removed, it was quite a lot to get to it. The leak was small, but enough to make that nasty smell over time. The core was replaced and the problem solved.

A leak in the heater core will cause a sweet smell (antifreeze). But, if there was a leak there, in removing the assembly, anything else inside there (dust, leaves and other residue) would have been cleaned out manually and therefore anything in there that would have caused a smell would have been removed. The smell eliminator I recommended is useful in that it disinfects any residue without having to disassemble the you found out, that is costly. If you had reported any dampness on the rug or steam on the windshield, (classic heater core leak symptoms) I'd have recommended taking it apart, but you did not.
Glad you have it fixed !!!!

Mine has the barnyard smell too, come to find out the heater core is bad and leaking antifreeze onto the passengers side floor, blowing "smeg" on to the windows & smells bad. I have 2 estimates for repair this week, one @ $750 and one @ $1100.

How do I get to the ac-heater barn door to see if it is working okay. AC setting only puts out hot air. AC is working okay.

the mix door is usually next to the heater core which is usually mounted under the dash board on the passenger side.

Can you tell me why my truck smells antifreezy when I started

Is the heater or ac fan on....? Where is the smell coming from?

my thought are if smell coming from exhaust, you have a head gasket problem.

If smell coming from AC or heater, likely a heater core leaking!

Heater of car smells

A mouse or leaves from a nearby tree have gotten into the AC/Heater blower motor and they are touching the blower motor speed control resistor, this is very hot and makes them smolder and smoke and smell. You will need to remove the blower motor from the housing that it is in and clean out what ever is in there.

Ok i have a pontiac grand am 1999 and i need to know where to find the door that closes the heat cold air, so i can get hot air in my car i removed the heater core thats under the dash so now i see a door...

Check the heat/Ac control head. That is most of the time the problem. It controls the door. You can find one in a Junk Yard or Savage Yard. Ask for the heat/AC control head.

the ac evaporator goes into the heater box under the good on the right hand side. Most everything else can be installed just by removing the doghouse.

Loud noise from under the dash, ac/heater area. No cool air 97 li

If this noise is a clicking sound and is coming from the front center of the dash, then it may be the blender door motor which will require removal of the dash to replace it. It will keep the door from switching from heat to a/c. Does the odor smell like you have a freon leak in your a/c evaporator core or does it smell like a rat stuck in your heater and a/c ducts?

2000 dodge grand caravan AC stinks

I don;t know who told you the coils would leak and let leaves in but don;t let them work on your car.

2 things to do.
1 make sure the drip tube is not clogged up. If it is water will build up and could mold. Should be a small hose coming off the firewall under the car. Just make sur eit is open and clean.

The next thing is to remove the AC/Heat fan and look in there. You can look in there and smell and remove any leaves/dirt you fine.

My wife's A/C and heat stinks like a barn yard

you will smell the freon not the leak detector ,some of the stories i hear but thats a new one on me ,anyway i think you might have a dead something inside it or leaves but you will need to remove the dash unit to get at anything .Another common cause is previous owner a chain smoker ,build up of nicotine over time and this forms a claggy film ,horrible ,,,, now one way which might work if you can see both units is a spray with brake and clutch cleaner ,this is highly inflamabe to wait for it to dry before starting car and usinbg blower .

Leaking heater core coolent smell through the a/c

The same thing happened to my '99. I found an 'off' brand heater core locally then seached the internet to find direction on how to install. I don't remember the link, but someone had posted pictures of the step by step. Although I must say the sticking point for me was removing the screw holding the heater core to the pipes coming from the front of the car then removing the core holder.
It took me a couple of hours, not really knowing what I was doing, but went real smooth. It's fixed for around $140! And NO MORE ANTIFREEZE SMELL!!

Rear gate (barn doors)

Climb into the back of your Yukon, using a apholstery tool (looks like a bent screwdriver with a claw on the end) or a putty knife and pry the bottom of the inner door skins off cut a 6 inch gash in the clear plastic to expose the door handle mechonizims. spray brake cleaner on the inner latch to clean, then using penitration oil to unsieze. Grab the long metal rod and work it up and down...the should open. repeat to the other door if it will not open as well. I had to replace my barn door inner latches on second barn door. (the door that opens last) with safari barn door latches. I got them from a wrecking yard cheap. ($15.00) to replace at GM....over $200.00. The wrecking yard told me the latches wouldn't work, but I look at the Safari latches and they were identical. My barn doors work perfectly. Hopefully this helps.
