How to replace a starter - 1999 Lincoln Town Car

STARTER, REPLACE 1. Disconnect battery ground cable. 2. Remove engine undercover. 3. Disconnect starter wiring from starter. 4. Remove starter retaining bolts, then the starter. 5. Reverse procedure to install.

did you replace it with a new starter or a wrecker starter, maybe a bad starter. check the teeth on the flywheel they maybe damaged causing the starter not to engage. you may have to shim the starter. were there any shims when you pulled the original starter off.

Starter Replacement (LZ4) Starter Replacement (LY7) Starter Replacement (LZ9) Starter Replacement (LE5)

Assuming the starter motor spins but doesn't engage to turn engine over to start you could have a bad starter drive which is part of the starter assembly or possibly damaged/missing teeth on flywheel ring gear. Depending on year and model vehicle, some starters you can replace just the starter drive otherwise you need to replace the whole starter. If you changed the starter look at the flywheel.

STARTER PROBLEMS

It can be faulty starter or there is loose connection from battery to starter. The starter assembly gets power from battery. Check voltages at starter wires and see if you are getting 12 volts or not. If not then its no power issue due to low battery volt or no connection between battery to starter.

Its located in the under hood engine compartment fuse box.

There will be three same relays.One for fuel pump and other for horn and bit bigger one for starter controlling.

check starter relay @ look for burnt fusable links around starter area also check starter connections on starter.

Does the starter make one click when you turn the key to the start position? If so, your starter solenoid contacts are worn/burnt. You can either replace the starter (expensive), or remove the starter & have the contacts replaced (inexpensive); Starter contact replacements are a common repair item.
