Drain and fill using Acura/ Honda ATF from a dealer only, should require 3.5 quarts. There is a 3/8" drive drain plug and a 17mm filler plug. Any knowledgeable Acura/Honda technician will advise you to do this every 30,000 miles. DO NOT FLUSH! only drain and fill.
cool off the fluid , locate, loosen and remove the drain plug of your ATF, fully drain the oil, once fully drained up to the last drop, put back the drain plug and refill the ATF. if its a manual transaxle the procedure is the same.....hope this helps.
Have supplies ready(long stem funnel to reachfill hole, 4 qts honda genuine atf-z1, rags for drips)
1. First, park the car while its hot on a flat surface and turn the
engine off. Locate the yellow transmission dipstick and remove it and
wipe it clean.
2. Look for the the ATF fill plug and washer(below and to the
left of the brake fluid reservoir) 17mm marked "ATF" and remove it.
3. Locate the drain plug(not the one on pointing towards the
drivers front tire but its located on on the drivers side of the
transmission pointing towards the passengers side and lying
horizontally) and remove it along with the washer. Its blue and is a
standard 3/8 square drive plug and remove it. Drain completely. (wait
15 min or so until ALL is gone and replace the plug after throughly
cleaning the magnet that is attached to it).
5. Replace atf fluid(honda says 3.3 qts- but mine took 3.8 to
bring to first hole in dipstick level-check while running(use honda z-1
fluid only-yes- its expensive).
6. Replace fill bolt and washer and tighten.
7. Replace dipstick, let engine get hot and recheck. Recheck again after driving a day or so.
Your done-good work, you saved a $100 dollars...
Your Civic auto transmission requires 6.2 US quarts TOTAL.
I know the Manual says to flush three times, but I believe the reference is to the situation IF you have temporarily used a Dexron II fluid. If you are already using Honda ATF-Z1, I wouldn't worry about flushing three times. I would simply look at the plug gasket to determine whether or not you need a new one. The old one will probably do fine, but gaskets certainly don't cost much so you might as well get one while you're getting the fluid (if somebody has one in stock).
Hope this helps.
Hello rsl4god.....Yes indeed without doubt... you should change transmission fluid regularly using only original Honda transmission fluid. This is a simple drain & refill job on the Odyssey . Heres my take on transmission fluid...Trans fluid is the life blood of your transmission. A quality trans fluid is more important to your trans than a quality oil is to your engine. As heat in the trans goes up, the life of the fluid (and your trans) goes down. Sadly most people ignore the transmission until it breaks. Hope this answers your question...
It sounds like the plant and sun gears are starting to wear that could be your problem. An transmission expert will probably have to look at the trany.
