Sounds like it might be your battery please make sure you have a fully charged battery in it . there are starter and alternator shops that would bench test it for you if you bring it to them i know pep boys and autozone bench test also . hope this helps
Hi kargi7,
I was chatting with you about your problem, and I hope that the screwdriver can help you to diagnose whether it is more a starter problem or more of a 'security' system problem.
Let me know what happened.
Starter Relay
Removal & Installation
To Remove: Disconnect battery negative cable.
Unlatch and open cover on Power Distribution Center.
See fuse and relay position label attached to underside of PDC cover for starter relay identification and location.
Remove starter relay from PDC.
To Install: See fuse and relay layout label attached to underside of PDC cover for proper starter relay location.
Place starter relay in proper receptacle in PDC.
Push down firmly on starter relay until terminals are fully seated.
Close and latch PDC cover.
Connect negative battery cable.
I read over the chat and I noticed (to review) that you said you replaced the steering column.
Is your shifter in the steering column? If it is, the adjustment of the cable to the transmission 'Park' sensor that we discussed on the automatic transmission, could be off. Manual transmissions have a similar safety device for preventing starts while the car is in gear.
The 'done' message may mean that the security system will not allow you to try anymore attempts for a few minutes to start the car, because the key is not recognized.
I'm not sure why you hear any grinding noises at all.
I wish you luck on this repair.
Another thing that occurred to me is that when the battery power was lost, the memory for the key was lost, kind of like the radio codes get lost in newer cars when batteries are changed without having a battery backup in the cigarette lighter. Is this a plausible thing?
The battery condition and the connections are things I would first check, I agree.
