Question about 1995 Jaguar XJ6

1 Answer

The gas gauge on our 1995 Jaguar XJ-6 has been malfunctioning for several months. It can read zero or full or anything in between, even after a fillup, but usually reads zero until the car burns some of the gas. The problem started with the needle twitching up and down just after starting the engine, and quickly got worse. Soon, the check engine light came on. I need to know if it can be caused by the gas gauge problem, such as the onboard computer thinking there is a fuel leak. The check engine light went out once, after the gas gauge started working normally for several days. As soon as the bad readings returned, the light came back on and has been on for several weeks. Also, is there a safe Jaguar OBD II code reader that will let me check the fault codes myself? Thank You, Daniel King

There is a FLOAT in the gas tank that bobs up & down in the gas in which the gauge gets a signal from to let u know your fuel level. they can go bad & send erratic readings to the gauge. (like a toilet bowl float) That is the most common cause of your problem. Good Luck

SOURCE: 2002 X-type Jaguar with 2.6 -- check engine light came on

My 2002 x-type did the exact same thing on many occasions and had many repeated trips to the dealership. This problem was ultimately cased by cracked hoses in the car's vacuum system (which is used in the cruise control and brakes). Have the dealer check the vacuum lines and the breather hose (mine had completely collapsed). Chances are they are leaking and causing your car to "buck" and the cruise to not work. Don't ignore this as it will affect the functionality of your brakes too over the longer term.

SOURCE: Engine won't start on Jaguar XJ8 Vandenplas TRAC NOT AVAILABLE

hey blackdiam522,
First did you have a check engine light, and do you know what the code was if you did?

Ok, the traction control not available isnt goin to affect the car from starting.During my year of a jaguar tech the most common for a crank, no start is a flooded engine. Now the two most causes for a flooded engine on these jags are 1. the weather is just super cold and all the own does is keep cranking the car to try to get to start. 2. A lot of short trip, a lot of city driving, 15 mins or less.

When you get something like this, a no start crank, you have to pump the gas pedal really fast, like your starting an oil muscle car. this forces more air into the engine.

when this no start happend u could get all these codes, what i maybe would recommend is a tune up, and some highway driving every once and a while to kept this from happening again, hopefully this helps, thanks.

Try running a good fuel system cleaner through it. LOTS of questionable fuel going around these days. Consider running cleaner every other month to keep system clean.

What kind and how many quarts of oil for the Jaguar xj 1995

On both my 90 and 92, I use and the recommended oil is a 20w50 multigrade oil. I have tried synthetics and they thin out and low pressure readings occur when running in hot weather. The normal range readings return with the regular multigrade oil.

I have a 1999 Jaguar XJ8, there is a Check Engine

the gas gauge is not related, that would be a defective gas gauge sending unit in the gas tank, the check engine light indicates that one of around 200 poss faults has occured in the electronic engine controls, you will need to have the OBD 2 engine control system tested for the fualt code that is stored when the light is turned on.

Oils pressure gauge fluctuates

check the oil viscosity,it might be too old(driven for toomany miles)..

if thats not ityou might need to get the oil preasure lubricating pump checked, and id suggest you do it fast or theres a lot of engine wear and tear.
