The coolant manifold where the thermostat rest on is cracked where it is bolted down. Any solutions on how to repair it? Or do I need to replace the hold manifold assemble? Thanks

You would really need to replace the plastic intake. they are not cheap, but any other "fix it" would only be temporary...

Where is thermosts located and how do i replace it?

2.2L Engine
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Properly drain and recover the coolant until the level is below the thermostat.
  3. Unfasten the coolant outlet-to-inlet manifold attaching bolt and nut, then remove the outlet.
  4. Remove the thermostat. Clean the inlet manifold and outlet mating surfaces.
To install:
  1. Install a new O-ring onto the thermostat
  2. Place the thermostat in the inlet manifold.
  3. Attach the coolant outlet to the inlet manifold, using the bolt and nut. Tighten to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
  4. Refill the engine cooling system.
  5. Connect the negative battery cable, then start the engine and check for coolant leaks.

2.3L and 2.4L Engines
(see Figure 7)

When adding coolant, it is important that you use GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL® (orange colored, silicate free) coolant meeting GM specifications. On these vehicles, if silicated coolant is added to the system, premature engine, heater core or radiator corrosion may result. In addition, the engine coolant will require change sooner; at 30,000 milee or 24 months.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Properly drain and recover the coolant to a level below the thermostat.
  3. Unfasten the cover-to-outlet pipe bolt, which is accessible through the exhaust manifold runners.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Disconnect the radiator and heater hoses from the outlet pipe.
  6. Unfasten the outlet pipe-to-oil pan bolt and the cover-to-outlet pipe bolts.
  7. Remove the thermostat, then clean the old gasket material from the mating surfaces.

To install:
  1. Position the thermostat in ite correct location, then install the cover-to-outlet pipe bolt. Tighten the bolt to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
  2. Install the outlet pipe-to-oil pan bolt. Tighten the pipe-to-oil pan bolt to 19 ft. lbs. (26 Nm) and the pipe-to-transaxle bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
  3. Connect the radiator and heater hoses to the outlet pipe.
  4. Carefully lower the vehicle.
  5. Install the cover-to-outlet pipe bolt through the exhaust manifold runner.
  6. Properly fill the cooling system, then connect the negative battery cable.

I'm in the process of replacing the thermostat on my 2003 freelander. finally got the coolant drained......that was fun. everything is disconnected and all intake plenum bolts removed( 4 small in the...

You will have to remove the intake manifold (this is the solid large plastic cover that covers the top of the engine when you remove the engine cover). There are many wires and small vacuum hoses to disconnect. Plus.., when re-installing, it is a common problem the manifold cracks if excessive torque is applied to the fastening bolts. And you probably should relpace the intake manifold gasket.You can then remove the thermostat assembly by disconnecting the hoses and loosening the mounting screw.

The procedure as per service manual is as follows:----

Following the Service Manual instructions, drain the coolant circuit, then remove the return pipe and the short rubber hose connected to the engine main coolant rail (1 clip at the bottom + 1 clip at the top). You remove also the outlet hose (1 clip at the engine outlet spout + 1 clip at the bottom pipe, you need to loosen the pipe mount to remove the hose). Once removed the return pipe you can undo the coolant rail: 2 (tight) bolts below the rail and the oil dipstick bolt holding the thermostat housing. Doing this without the manifold in place is simple, but its not that easy with the manifold on.... once loosened the coolant rail you can remove the thermostat housing. You open it (3 bolts) and replace the old thermostat with new. All 3 gaskets should be replaced, to minimize the risk of leaks. Apply silicone lubricant on the O-rings, then fit housing + coolant rail back in.

Thermostat Removal & Installation 2.2L Engine To Remove:
  1. Remove the exhaust manifold. If equipped with an automatic transmission.
  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following: chevy_cav_02-04_tstat.gif

    • Thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolts. chevy_cav_02-04_feedpipe.gif

    • Thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe.
    • Thermostat.
To Install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Thermostat.
    • Thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe.
    • Thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolt.
      1. Tighten bolt to 89 in lbs (10 Nm).
    • Exhaust manifold if equipped with an automatic transmission.
  2. Fill the cooling system.
2.4L Engine To Remove:

  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Remove the exhaust manifold heat shield.
  3. Remove the coolant inlet housing mounting bolts through the exhaust manifold.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Remove the coolant inlet housing stud from the oil pan.
  6. Remove wheel and tire assembly.
  7. Remove the engine splash shield.
  8. Remove the mounting bolts from the transaxle-to-engine block support. Remove the support.
  9. Remove the coolant housing pipe.
  10. Remove the thermostat.
  11. Clean the mating surfaces.
To Install:
  1. Install the thermostat.
  2. Install the coolant housing pipe.
  3. Install and secure the transaxle support-to-engine block mounting bolts.
  4. Install the engine splash shield.
  5. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  6. Install the coolant inlet housing stud to the oil pan.
    • Tighten to 19 ft lb (26 Nm).
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Install the coolant inlet housing bolts through the exhaust manifold.
    • Tighten the coolant inlet housing bolts to 10 ft lb (14 Nm).
  9. Install the exhaust manifold heat shield.
  10. Fill the cooling system.
  11. Inspect the system for leaks.
3.4L Engine To Remove:
  1. Drain the cooling system.
  2. Remove the air cleaner.
  3. Remove exhaust crossover pipe.
  4. Disconnect the surge tank line fitting from the coolant outlet.
  5. Remove the thermostat housing to intake manifold bolts.
  6. Remove the thermostat housing outlet and thermostat.
To Install:
  1. Install the thermostat and housing outlet.
  2. Install the thermostat housing bolts.
    • Tighten the thermostat housing bolts to 18 ft lb (25 Nm).
  3. Install exhaust crossover pipe.
  4. Connect the surge tank line fitting to the coolant outlet.
    • Tighten the fittings to 15 ft lb (21 Nm).
  5. Install the air cleaner.
  6. Fill the cooling system.
  7. Inspect the system for leaks

How to replace the water pump on 1993 oldsmoblie achieva.

2.4 enigine is the harder of the 3 enignes. it will need a timing chain to be removed and a coolant tube in the back of the engine to be removed. this job on the book calls for almost 7 hours.

if its 3.3 or 3100 its alot easier.

3100 is just 4 10mm pulley bolts and 5 or 6 small 8mm water pump bolts.

3.3 is alittle more work, but same concept as 3100 engine. more owkr only cause its in a tighter area.

Intake manifold sealant repair now leaking maybe oil? coolant b4

You need to remove the thermostat housing again. Then you will have to extract the bolts you broke off. You will need to drill and tap them so you can use an easy out to remove the broken bolts from the threads. Then you can clean up both mating surfaces and replace the gasket and the thermostat. Check to make sure you did not crack the thermostat housing or you may have another leak when finished. They are usually aluminum and break easily if too much pressure is applied or they are corroded and weak.

1998 mustang gt coolant leak

I just had the same problem. Ford design the intake manifold with plastic water crossover which cracks. The coolant will leak onto the top of the block and and then down the back of the engine. This intake design is a known defect and was ocvered under by Ford for 7 years past the date of mfg. The crack either is in the crossover or the thermostat housing. I happed on this when I found the same leak and traced it back to the thermostat housing. I changed the thermostat, but it leaked worse. You can pickup a aftermarket for $200 and it's about 4-6 hr job to replace.
