Question about 1989 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

We have a 1989 toyota camry the key will not turn to start the car. It has a button on top of the stering column to release the key when you turn the car off and normally when you put the key in you have to push that button to get it back out. This time you can pull the key out without pushing that button, but it will not turn the ignition. The steering column is locked. We have used the override on the shift to put the car in neutral and still will not start. Would removing the release button fix this? We have replaced the entire stering column once for the same problem.

Hi
Sounds like the ignition barrel has failed.
If you replace any part you must ensure that the key and the transducer ring are matched. If not, the immobiliser will come on and you will never start the car.
Get a diagnostic test to verify the immobiliser is turning off.

Either the power steering pump is going bad, or the rack and pinion is going bad.

Power steering fluid - Dexron 2 or 3 automatic transmission fluid. Yes transmission fluid. And while you are at it check the fluid level in the transmission.
Since you got the hood up, check the brake fluid, wiper fluid, radiator fluid, battery fluid, oil level.

Locate the idler pulley. Loosen the nut in the center of the idler pulley. Then loosen the bolt that protrudes from the back of the pulley. This will let the belt go slack.

I have a 2000 toyota corolla and the key will only turn to acc. We have tried the other key. The stering wheel is unlocked. We have jiggled the shifter to make sure it is in park.

See if you turn the wheel and try to turn the key at the same time if it releases. We might get a free spot where the key should turn. The lock may be in a bind and pressure on it may release it.
Clean and lubricate the lock cylinder. Electric cleaner to flush the dirt and liquid graphite to lubricate. A substitute for the electric cleaner is a spray of isoprophyl alcohol.
You may also need to tap the assembly for the ignition switch to release the mechanical parts. See if you can get the cover of the steering column off to gain access to the ignition switch assembly.
Check also if the spare does the same, other wise the key may have deformed.

If you are unsure of how to take the cover off take it to a mechanic. There are bolts underneath the column and you may need to dissamble some of under the column and dashboard to remove

1989 Toyota Camry

Hi,

On an 89 Toyota Camry with manual transmission, two possible reasons:
  • clutch;
  • release bearing
Try bleeding the clutch on the slave cylinder. If this does not prove to be corrective, you may have to have the transmission/clutch checked/repaired/replaced. In some instances, it could just be a sticking release bearing or clutch fork.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
