The picture in chiltons doesn't look like the picture under the hood The original problem - can't find the spark plugs.

you probably have Coil Packs. Each Coil Pack has a 2 wire electrical connector to it. There is one small bolt holding the Coil Pack to the Cyl Head, remove bolt, remove connector, remove Coil Pack, remove Plug, reverse & road test

1998 mercury grand marquis 4.6 sparkplug change

un-plug the coil packs--injectors--pull wiring out of the way,and then unbolt the coil packs and pull them out,and use a 6 inch to 8 inch extension on a 3/8 drive rachet with a 5/8 plug socket...snug the plugs back in pretty good because the 4.6 and 5.4 are known to blow the plugs out and wreck the threads on the head.On the drivers side you may have to unbolt the fuel rail(2 bolts)and lift it up off from the injectors, make sure that you dont tear the 0 rings on the injectors and watch to see if some or any 0 rings comes off from the injectors and stays with the fuel rail..when putting the fuel rail back on the injectors, use a little motor oil and wipe it on all 0 rings to assist in going back together without tearing the 0 rings.
