Intake Air Temperature SensorOperation
The Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor is a variable temperature sensitive resistor. Sensor resistance will change based on air temperature. The higher the temperature, the lower the resistance. The Engine Management System (EMS) provides a reference voltage and monitors the voltage drop between a fixed value internal resistance and the sensor resistance. This is called a voltage divider circuit.
IAT sensor values are used by the EMS to assist with the calculation of idle speed, fuel mixture and spark advance.
Inaccurate voltages from the IAT sensor may affect pulse-width, idle quality and tail pipe emissions. Intermittent signals may cause hesitation, stumble and surging. If an IAT sensor failure accompanies an Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor failure cooling fan operation may also be affected.
Some manufacturers' incorporate the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor as part of the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor, or air flow meter. Refer to current service information for specific applications. Related Symptoms

Think Mass airflow meter. It needs cleaning. Just don't use any spray cleaner. Severe damage will result. Look for a spray cleaner that is made specifically for the job. Check the cam position sensor too.
Roll the engine around until the compression stroke on number one cylinder (both valves are closed) and stop on top dead centre. The rotor should be pointing to the number one terminal on the distributor. If it is not extract the distributor and replace it with the rotor pointing to number one. That should be it.
Hopefully their are no other issues relating to the original breakage so you should make sure the new distributor is spinning normally.
It sounds like your cooling fans are not comming on by themselves, but when you turn on the ac it forces them to turn on. Make sure relay is good, then replace coolant temp sensor, this may have failed no telling pcm to turn on cooling fans. Thanks
If this has a 4.3 v6, which most do, remove air filter cover, base, mas air flow sensor,snorkle,and throttle body cover. T-stat is on drivers side front,top of engine between a/c compressor and throttle body.
The owners manual will tell you the temp you should use, but you can also look at the old one when you pull it out as it will have the value stamped on it. As for the brand, most are all okay. I use stant brand since that's what the local parts store carries. To find the thermostat under the hood, follow the top radiator hose to the engine block and a domed housing. It's under the housing.
