You need the fan clutch stick tool. To see what one looks like google: BMW fan clutch removal tool. Then make one out of steel. All you need is a 5/16 drill bit and a grinder. or buy one. Then get a 1.25" open end wrench, it's virtually the same as a 32mm open end wrench except cheaper and slightly more common. With your new found clutch stick, hold two of the bolt heads on the water pump pulley and grab the nut with the wrench. It's left hand thread. So to loosen it, move it clockwise while holding the pulley still with the stick. When re-installing, use anti sieze compound. The whole job takes 3 minutes with the right tool.

Your fan resistant as you put it is on the side of the internal heater radiator container. a bit hard to get at Easy way of puting is above the clutch pedal (right hand drive) on to your left. Hard to see. One screw holding the unit.
