roll the crankshaft pulley around until u get the mark to line up with 0 or TDC. once u get the cover off mark the cam sproket to the head with whiteout and mark the crank gear to the block also. (in case they move on you. loosen tensioner and pry to one side.tighten tensioner bolt and remove the belt. install new belt and get the slack to move toward the tensioner side. (u may have to move the cam slightly to allow all the slack to go toward the tensioner. then move it back to the mark, making sure the crank didnt move. loosen tensioner bolt and let it spring toward the belt and apply pressure with yr hand a little more snug while u tightn bolt. then rotate the crankshaft 2 revolutions by hand and your marks should line back up. if the marks are more than 1/2 tooth off u must re do it!
On the 1.0L geo metro engine the main bearing caps go on startine with #1 at the pully timing belt end of the engine with the arrow pointing in that direction. Then #2 and so on in the same manor. Hope this helps.
The firing order is 1-3-2, distrubtor rotates counter clockwise. looking at engine from front of vehicle cyl. # 1 will be on your left cyl.# 2 center and cyl.# 3on your right.
Get to know the sister cars. The Suzuki Swift is almost completely identical to the Geo Metro and the Pontiac Firefly: the only differences were that the Metro and the Firefly were available in sedan form and the Swift wasn't. Also, no changes were made to any of these cars between 1995 and 1997. If you look for parts for any of these cars they will work.
Vehicles mentioned: 1995, 1996, 1997 Suzuki Swift 1995, 1996, 1997 Geo Metro 2/3dr 1995, 1996, 1997 Pontiac Firefly 2/3dr
In addition the only things that changed after 1997 were the bumpers and front turn signals (and that the Metro became a Chevy) so taillights for later Swifts/Metros/Fireflies should work as well.
