Is your air conditioning on? Turn it off and see if it goes away. If it does it is the air conditioning compressor. If not, check oil level and the serpentine belt.

How do you know if the timing chain is going out . 97 lincoln contenintal

I suggest you ask an experienced person listen to the noise.

Hydraulic tappets can click for a while after starting and usually aren't anything to worry about unless the noise becomes louder, harsher and more pronounced as the engine speed increases.

If the clicking is suspected to be timing chain related it would be very unwise to ignore it.

2017 sportage has a slight engine noise that speeds up when accelerating plus has power hiccups at various speeds. Dealer said this is normal noise, didn't make it at purchase.

no engine noise is normal if it wasn't there on purchase
could be tappet or hydraulic adjuster worn out
run the fault codes for the other problem
Kia Sportage runs a timing chain so the noise and engine performance problems could be from a worn / slack timing chain

Is it an interference or noninterference engine? Think timing chain has broke

Broken timing chain is a very large problem, if it happened while engine is running. Bent/broken valves and such. Makes a LOT of noise, and engine stops immediately.

Your question doesn't include make/model/year, so your question isn't possible to answer. Doesn't really matter, though, if your timing chain broke. That's pretty rare. Timing belt, yes. Chain, no.

When looking at the jeep liberty transmission from under neath should it oerfectly aligned or set crooked

Technically, timing chains are designed and built to last the entire life of the engine. So in theory, you should replace it only when it's broken. However, if the chain breaks while your engine is running, it could wreak considerable havoc, so waiting for a break isn't the best practical strategy. Before a timing chain breaks there are signs of wear, and it isn't hard to check for them. If your Jeep Cherokee is showing some of the signs, it is time to replace the timing chain.
    Timing Chain Function
  1. The timing chain connects the camshaft to the crankshaft via a gear system so that the top and bottom ends of the engine rotate together. If the timing chain has stretched and is skipping teeth, the timing will be thrown off badly, causing the Cherokee to run inefficiently, if at all. If the timing chain breaks altogether, the Jeep's engine will simply shut off, and many valve train components can be damaged in the process.
  2. Loose Chain
  3. Remove the distributor cap on the Cherokee's engine so that you can see the rotor. Then rotate the engine by hand with a wrench on the crank pulley very slowly. The rotor should begin to rotate with the engine almost immediately. If there is any delay, it is likely that the timing chain is stretched and needs to be replaced. Another way is to put a timing light on the Cherokee while the engine is idling, and watch the timing mark. If it wanders a few degrees in either direction, then the chain is probably stretched. Sometimes, a loose chain will cause a loud clicking, especially when the engine is cold and under power. The noise tends to go away once the engine warms up.

Loud clicking noise coming from crankshaft pulley and goes away when a/c is on and when idle is higher. Why the noise?

Take a dry bar of soap and touch it against the sides of the belt(s) while the engine is running. If the noise goes away for a little while, the noise is from the belt settling into the grove of the pulley. Belts can really make loud pooping noises.

If this has no effect, then your timing chain may be too loose for the timing chain tensioner to compensate, and the chain is slapping against the inside of the timing chain cover.

If this is the case, do not let this condition go on. The timing chain cover is aluminum, and the chain is high grade steel. The chain will wear a hole in the cover if it is hitting the inside of it, and that is allowed to continue.
