You figure that the harmonic balancer is mounted on rubber. the rubber will get old, shrink and get hard, this will allow the outer ring to move on the inner ring. Only option is to replace the balancer with a new one.
Either Auto Zone or O Riley auto supply will loan you the puller to remove the harmonic balancer. You leave a cash deposit for the tool and will be refunded when you return it.
What model Saturn ? It could be in the side of the engine block or behind the crankshaft pulley ( harmonic balancer ) , you would need a special puller for this one .
if it is the same engine family then the harmonic balance will be the same unit
unless thee has been significant engine changes in the period ,it will be the same motor.
The balancer is bad, or it has come loose. There is a little metal wedge piece called a woodruff key that holds the balancer in place, and then the crankshaft center bolt keeps the balancer on tight. There should be no wobble or movement at all of the harmonic balancer. Take it off, it may still be alright, but find out why the pulley moves on the crankshaft. Maybe the key is missing. This should not be an expensive repair-it's not a problem with the motor, just that balancer pulley.
remove the supercharger belt... check for play in the supercharger pulley... there is a plastic coupler that connects drive from the supercharger cone to the main body of the supercharger... these wear out ... it is a problem on both the series 1 (1995) and series 2 (96-99) supercharged 3800 engines
usually all crankshaft sensors are located right next to the main drive pulley (Harmonic balancer). As far as being easy is concerned some are not so easy as some require the removal of the harmonic balancer to get to it.. but you might be lucky Gm is pretty good at making the Crankshaft sensor accessible without removing the harmonic balancer.
These cars have a lot of problems with all the idler pulleys and the tensioner. You will most likely have to replace them. You may also want to check the harmonic balancer and make sure it is running true.Spin the supercharger by hand with the belt off,it should spin freely with no end play in the shaft to speak of.I hope this helps...Dan
