If your timing belt breaks some of the valves will stay open and the pistons will come up and either break the valve or could put a hole in a piston. This is very costly. The rattle could be the belt tensioner
Get it checked as soon as possible. It could cost you thousands. If your timing belt breaks, you will need to pretty much take the engine apart, replace valves, resurface heads, replace head gaskets and timing belt. Labor for all these jobs is not cheap at all.
You want to replace the belt ASAP. If the belt does break, trying to turn over the engine can cause damage resulting in bending valves or worse. You will NOT need to take the engine apart. You can re align the cams and crankshaft when installing the new timing belt. Just make sure that if the vehicle dies before you can change the belt, don't keep trying to restart the engine. Replace the belt every 105,000 miles or earlier.
What if the belt shears teeth instead of breaking? Would that ruin the valves? My wife tried cranking it after it sheared teeth off, the rotor button wasn't turning when she tried cranking it back
Thanks for any info!!!!
