OK what I put here is for the E class Mercedes of the same era. Generally Mercedes shares build concepts and ideas across different classes of car. The mirror assembly consists of a mirror frame socket fitted to ball on the end of a mount arm. If the mount on the SL is the same then the idea is to stop the mirror from moving freely on the ball. It should be possible to slip the end of a clothing pin(s) between the ball, which is steel, and the socket, which is plastic. Force it gently in and check for the degree of play in the mirror. Once the mirror is stiff clip the protruding remaining length of pin(s) away to keep things looking tidy. Crude, effective but, above all, much cheaper than $900

Do you check the hydraulic fluid level, on my 1997 Sl 500, with the top up or down?

Top needs to be up when top is down the Pistons extend with fluid showing it is low and if you fill at that time when you close it the Pistons will go back in and fluid will run out and possible cause of a leak

Why does 97 miata headlight retractor stay in upright position?

Common problem with any brand of car with power headlights. Probably the motor. You could inspect the unit to verify that it moves freely. Check on the Miata forum.

Car suddenly stopped 30 minutes later runs perfectly

This failure could be the crankshaft position sensor. Overheating or an oil leak through the rear seal can cause it to fail intermittently. My SL500 failed to start after traveling a distance, but after sitting for an hour or so, it suddenly started. Replaced the CPS and all was fine. Also, a dying fuel pump might cause this.

The drivers side rear view mirror is loose. How can I tighten it down?

Put a sheet metal screw between the mirror and mirror body below the mirror. This will allow the mirror to still break free and swing if you hit something kinda hard, but will keep it from moving freely. There is no other way to tighten it. It's just a case of the spring becoming fatigued.

Replacing the rear view mirror on a Ford Explorer is easy. The only obstacle you might encounter is fear of breaking the glued metal plate off the windshield. Do not sweat it. You can buy glues at the auto parts store to reattach the mirror to the windshield (Difficulty: Moderately Easy).

Instructions:
  1. Tap gently at the base of the mirror where it slides on over the metal plate glued to the windshield and pull upward. Some rear view mirrors have a small Allen screw that tightens the base of the rear view mirror to the metal plate. Disconnect the electrical plugs if your rear view mirror has them.
  2. Pull the rear view mirror clear of the metal plate. Clean around the metal plate glued to the windshield. If the metal plate has come off because of harsh weather or from hammering too hard at it, reattach it with glue designed for this job.
  3. Clean the area where you will be attaching the metal plate on the windshield. Apply the glue evenly on the surface of the metal plate that will go against the window. Be sure to clean and scrape off all the old glue before applying the new glue. Gently push the metal plate against the windshield in the spot you wanted it and hold tight for five minutes.
  4. Wait a day before putting the base of the mirror or replacement rear view mirror onto the metal plate. Do not force the base over the plate. Forcing it will likely dislodge it again. Press firmly until it will not slide along the grooves of the metal plate. Reconnect your electrical plugs and tighten the Allen screw if your new mirror has one. Adjust the mirror according to your safe viewing preference

Hope help with this (remember rated this help). Good luck.
