The surging is related to your Idle Air Control Valve (IACV), it adjusts idle based on coolant temperature, your coolant could be low or your IACV could be bad.

Grinding noise

I believe what you're saying is that after your car has been in park and you put it in gear to drive it makes a grinding noise for about 30 miles. I recommend checking you transmission fluid level and adding fluid as needed. You should do this fluid check while the engine is warm and car is idling. Since you have an 88 you probably have a lot of miles on it. I've had very good luck using Slick 50 High Mileage Automatic Transmission Treatment. A bottle of this costs around $15. If none of this works it may be time to take it into the shop or trade it in.

Timing Belt

Your best bet is to register at www.civicforums.com and search their tech archives. If you're going to find it for free anywhere, it's going to be there. Otherwise, spend $25 and register with that specific car at www.alldatadiy.com and you'll find that it's an online service manual and troubleshooting guide.
