My 2001 Malibu has a recurring problem: the A/C control head assembly \r\nburns out/breaks/quits working. The original lasted seven years and 44,000 miles. The repair/rplacement with company part lasted one year, or 5,000 miles. The next replacement managed to last two years,or about 10,000 miles. And it, too, was a compay replacement part. My question is: is this a common problem or did I get two lemons in a row? And about how much should that repair/replacement cost me?

You have a system short. Too much current is going to the control panel.

If the unit is overheating ( your statement mentions burns , breaks etc that indicates that something is drawing excessive current through that unit
a possible fix is to use a rely in that circuit if you cannot find the reason for the excessive current draw
failing ac clutch coil would be a good place to start looking

SOURCE: 02 tahoe water pump coolant smell to thundergod

Check a private shop out by asking around and seeing what people that have used them think. There are only a few manufacturers of heaters, and Just about every car company outsources them. The reason that the job is expensive is that nearly the entire dashboard needs to come apart to remove it. (in my opinion the engineers are morons...old designs were far more easily serviced except for corvette...one took me 13hrs to do and I swore I'd never do another one!!!) When actually doing the job, close attention must be paid to all electrical connections for everything in general and servo "motors" that operate the heater doors. I've often seen a core replacement result in ancillary electrical problems if it's not done carefully. In the financial bind most dealerships find themselves in , most are trying to "wring" every dollar out of every job...Find a good private shop with a good reputation and techs that don't double talk or evade your questions and you should be fine. NO peppy boys or "discount" chain shops...they just can't do this work.
With the miles you stated, attention needs to be paid to routine service, with an eye to leaks, noises "odd " things you see and hear. It appears you are doing this already. Just keep it up.
I do a "look around" every few weeks and coupled with the use of synthetics, get over 350K out of everything I own.
Good Luck!!!

SOURCE: What is the drive cycle or vehicle break in for 1999 Malibu

the monitors should have set by now. usually its around 50 miles. and a couple cold starts. i would have the computer scanned if the monitors have not set and youve driven quite abit more than this. we change batteries all the time and usually have all the monitors set in a couple hours.

2001 chevy malibu dome light not working cant find the right fuse and power mirrors not working either

Dome light runs off the interior fuse. Dash, radio and others also. If the work, could be a bad bulb, switch or wire. Mirrors power comes from the master switch. Could be the mirror switch or mirror motors. If both quit working at the same time, look to the switch. If they died separately, After time. Replace the mirror assembly if you want them to work. They can be adjusted by hand.Push on the mirror.

Traction control no longer works

There are sensors on every wheel that tell the computer how fast the wheel is spinning. Likely one or more of those sensors is either bad or simply disconnected.

you have to take off the entire bumper. just for the bulb. he doesnt speak and there is more to taking it off and replacing the bulb. So I am going to add the seven year old who takes off the entire thing a video seven minutes long. **** just a friendly reminder*** with care remove the plastic push pins they can break pretty easily and youll need to replace them if broken.

Had a 1/4 tank of gas in car but low fuel light stays on, put 5 more gallons of gas in the car and light will not go off, gas hand will not move and car will not crank 2001 Chevy Malibu

check the connection for the fuel pump at the right rear wheel just above the control arm. the connection gets corroded and causes the fuel pump and gauge not to work. if the plug looks good then most likely the fuel fump assembly is bad.

Antifreeze won't stay in coolant, don't see it in driveway and car over heats constantly.I have had the water pump changed, coolant reservoir changed, new thermostat and nothing works. Are there any more...

That series of malibu is notorious for bad head and intake gaskets which leak antifreeze into the lubrication and combustion areas. I fixed the girlfriend's by getting a motor out of a junkyard, paying someone to break it down and replace all gaskets then install it. Lasted a year and then we began again. Good luck. Google it if you do not believe me.

The blower on my heater will not cut off. I have no working controls

sounds like a bad switch or a stuck reley call dealer ask if there is a reley and where it is located if easily accessable go to salvage grab a reley for 2-5 bucks and replace yours

if this doesnt work then you likely need a switch but reley is likely culprit

Break light is out

This is the corrective method for your brake lights not working when your headlights are on(2000 Jeep Cherokee Larado).
1) The cause of the problem is heat from the bulb.
2) Remove the light assembly as if you were going to change a bulb.
3) Turn the socket and remove it from the taillight assembly and set it aside(check to be sure your bulb is not burnt out).
4) Look at the opening, you will see 3 flat chrome colored contacts on the assembly.
5) Notice the one by it self at the top of the opening, that is the "ground".
6) If you look closely you will notice the plastic around the ground contact has shrunk a little bit, this caused the contact to pull away from the socket, causing the problem.
7) With a small flat head screwdriver, VERY GENTLY pry up the contact so it stays slightly upward by itself.
8) Re-insert the bulb assembly back into the housing and press your brake petal with your lights on.
9) You should be in good to go!
10) Tools: Phillips head screwdriver and a small flat head screwdriver.
11) Time : 5 minutes per light
