Good news: they can be changed. Bad news: you have to change the entire hub, they are sealed bearings. The hub should cost $230 to $250. I just put one on my 2500hd and it cost $235.

If it's 4 wheel drive, it could be a bearing in the differential or transfer case chain on its way out.

If it's 2 wheel drive then all it could be is either brakes or wheel bearing/hub assembly.

Sounds like there may be a problem with the left front wheel bearing/hub assembly easy to replace only takes about 30-45 min and about $55-125 in parts. Jack both front whels up and with it in drive turn wheels back and forth and listen to each side. I am pretty sure it is the left side but check both.

1999 Chevy Suburban 1500 stuck in 4 wheel drive.

Check the wire harness on the transfer case to make sure it's still plugged in. Check the selector switch in the dash. Check the hub sensor wire harnesses on the front wheels.
Check for error codes through OBD-II connector under the dash.
Good luck.
