Ford vehicles are equipped with a fuel pump cut off switch that will shut power to the fuel pump in the event of a collision. By hitting the pothole, there was probably enough "force" making the switch mistakenly shut off the fuel pump. The switch should be located in the trunk either on the left or right side. Locate the switch and press the reset button. If it clicks when pressed, then the switch was activated. Try starting the car. If it starts, then that was the problem. I own a 1997 Ford Escort and the same thing happened to me...the pothole caused enough "force" thereby the switch took it as an impact. I hope this helps you out.

If the problem is not a vac leak, it could be the idle circuit inside the carb. You may have to replace or rebuild the carb to fix it.

Check for a plugged fuel filter, after you check the fuel cap is on correctly. If that's not the problem,it could be the fuel pump. You can get the fuel pressure read at the rail by any reputable shop. don-ohio

I have a 1999 ZX2 ford escort that starts, but dies in seconds

It is was a gas filter problem blocking gas flowing from the pump. What happening was that when it was trying to **** the last drop of gas into the engine it really disturbed dirts inside the fuel filter and made it clogged at fine mesh. And also make sure give sometime for gas delivered into the fuel line it since it was empty when you change the fuel filter. It means you have to keep starting for a while so gas can go up to the fuel distributor then injectors.

1994 Ford Escort dies at stops

I had the same problem a year ago. I problem was that the intake manifold gasket had a small hole and it was causing the computer to constantly change the air to fuel ratio. The constant changing cause the engine to die at stops.

Timing belt? fuel filter?

Running the tank low (below 1/4) on fuel ruins the fuel pump, it uses tthe gas around it to cool it down, most likely you will need a new fuel pump.
