Transmission filter is located on the bottom of the valve body in the transmission. You have to drop the transmission oil pan to replace the transmission filter and transmission fluid.
Thank you for using fixya and good luck

The filter is inside the transmission attached to the valve body, it is really more of a strainer than a filter.

Where is the pcm located on a 1997 mercury tracer?

Hello Rippgut.
The PCM is mounted in the console.
The park brake and shifter console needs to be removed to access it.
Also the 4 screws that hold down the shifter need to be removed.

I hope your repair goes well.

Why does my 1993 mercury tracer slips in and out of overdrive gear on the open highway?

Have you had the transmission serviced lately? Sounds like the transmission fluid is getting too hot and shifting it out of OD. Check to make certain the fluid is clean, the filter is not stopped up, and the transmission cooler is also not stopped up. Good Luck
