2002 ford f250, 7.3 diesel, 4x4. i was driving down the road in cruise control at about 60 mph and saw the battery light flash for an instant and go out, then all gauges went to zero as if the key was turned off, no reading on the odometer/tripomenter, radio went silent, and power windows would not work. drivablilty was not affected what so ever, cruise remained operative. after a few seconds, all gauges pegged out to thier upper limit and then retured to zero and then immediately indicated normally, and everything returned to normal. tripometer was not affected. this is an intermmitent problem that has only happened a few times so far under similar driving conditions. any help would be greately appreciatted, let me know if you need any more info. thanks in advance, bill.
If the fuse fails going to the security system all gauges and headlights will go off and won't be able to put truck in gear. It will idle forward or reverse but that's all. Initial indicators are having engine stall when putting vehicle in reverse.

sounds like an earth connection ,but where ,,,,back of dash,,,battery earth,,,ECU earth point ,,try putting a drop of oil on the earth points with a conventional oil can no sprays of crappy fish oil other than that you would have to wait for it to happen again in front of a mechinic to find it,.or trade it in for a nice europeon size car with a an engine under 1600cc .5litres is a bit obscene in this day and age and price of petrol
SOURCE: speedometer works, but odometer/tripometer stopped working
speedomenter cable may be broke or speed gear may be bad

Check the vehicle speed sensor in the transmission.

OdometerGears.com has the gears you need to repair your odometer. E20=20 tooth gear and a 16 tooth medium pod The two gears together are $54.00 including the shipping. it is best to replace the gears as a set if you never want the odometer to fail again.

Found problem myself. The voltage regulator in the alternator was bad causing high voltage spikes. Changed alt. and problem went away
