Smell of petrol inside the car

Hi
I have a jaguar xj6 3.2s 1993 there is a strong smell of petrol in the car its not alwise there but ive noticed it smells stronger when its low on petrol so i was thinking it might be some sort of vapour problem, the tank is in the boot and as soon as you open the boot the smell just hits you in the face, ive checked all the pipes on the tank and all seems fine, does anyone know what it could be? Thanks

I had a similar problem with a 92 when I replaced the float/level sensor in the tank. Did you recently change the pump or sensor?
Check the tightness of anything you may have loosened or opened. There is also a line that usually drains water from the depression in which the filler cap sits. If you have a bad cap and even a minor overflow or spill from a fill-up, gas could leak into the trunk and once absorbed into the carpeting it is very difficult to remove the smell from the matting. I power washed mine with solvents and water based detergents, three times and let them air dry each time, finally placing an odor absorbing chemical in the trunk to solve the problem. Good luck hope this helps.

Smells of petrol

Have a mechanic locate the leak, this is dangerous. A pot of water will absorb gas vapors, to keep it from spilling put a towel in it.

Bad petrol smell

In most cases smelling gas inside the car comes from air entering the venting system from the engine compartment. Just a few drops can cause a strong smell. And a small leak may be tough to find.
It could be excess fuel going out the exhaust pipe, but your check engine light should be on if that were the case.

Hi my bmw 316i 1600 with a e36 engine is only doing about 10 to the gall, any ideas, also notice a strong smell of petrol when first starting car and smells stays there for about 15 mins, and also notice...

run the fault codes
problems with running rich include:-
injectors not working properly
excessive fuel pressure
leaking injector seals
heated oxygen sensor failure ( they are located in the exhaust manifold /pipe before the cat converter and are used to read the exhaust gas composition and report to the ECM which adjusts the air/fuel mixture accordingly
ambient air /BARO sensor which report the air temp/pressure to again allow the ECM to set mixture
The strong fuel smell can be from fuel leaks , flooding --as stated with injectors or an EVAP system vent solenoid problem
The first 4 possibles would be the most obvious place to start especially with a fault code reading

When I enter the car, I smell a antifreeze/exhaust smell in the car. Do I take the car into the mechanic to get serviced. I haven;'t noticed any leaks.

the smell is caused by a leaking heater core inside the dash, it only takes a tiny bit of vaporized hot coolant to smell very strongly.

Grand am smells like gas inside the car

I would definatly recheck the regulator to make certain you do not have any leaks.
But to be clear, you are smelling gas and not exhaust?
Also, is you cowl seal in good shape, not missing or damaged in any way?
Let me know.
