I drove around for a good 2 months without my front shaft. Nothing bad happened. Don't be surprised if you get stuck on a wet leaf though!
You WILL NOT have park without the front shaft. You're rig will slowly roll if you are on the slightest incline, so carry around a brick or something to put behind/in front of your tire.

If you want to do that to save fuel. don't bother...You will not see enough improvement to outweigh the risk of damage to the transfer case. If the front diff has failed, you can get another at most scrapyards and it should not take you more than a few days to install it (far less if you know how) Remember also that all four tires must be the exact same size, brand and design or you can damage the driveline.
