My check engine light is coming on regularly. I put on my cap to make sure its tight and then it goes off. Is this a fuel sensor item on a 2001 olds silhouette?

The gas cap light is a generic light that indicates an emission problem. Usually a vacuum/pressure leak within the system. The gas cap is usually the first thing to check, however may not be the problem. There are numerous sensors and lines that control the vacuum/pressure/ of the fuel vapors and one of these is loose/disconnected/defective causing this light to come on. I would recommend inspecting hoses under the hood for any that may be loose/disconnected. You may also require a scan test to view sensor data to isolate the source of the light
This can happen if the gas cap is not properly installed. Make sure you hear several clicks when installing. After 10 or so starts the Service Engine Soon light usually goes away.
A second cause could be a problem with the ground wire that comes from the gas cap sensor and goes to the body. Look up into the wheel well by the filler pipe to check.
A third can be the result of a vacuum leak in the fuel evaporator (EVAP) system. Look for any hoses that go from the air intake to a sensor on the fuel rail (fuel injected cars). Many cars have plastic engine covers that have to be removed to see the fuel rails, sensors and hoses. Most require unscrewing the oil filler to get the cover off. You may not think the hose is leaking but replacing may make your problem go away. A small vacuum leak can also affect the fuel flow and affect the engine operation.
My experience is with the 3.8 engine but this probably applies to lots of engines. On the 3.8 it is the two piece hose that comes from the air intake with one small hose going to the top of the engine and the other going across the front of the engine into a hose that does a 180 degree turn that comes back to a sensor. It costs about $25 and is a dealer item.
There may be other causes but these are three common ones.
Sorry, but there is no "sensor at the fuel cap". Therefore, there is no code that says "sensor at the fuel cap". There is, however, a Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) That indicates a possible problem with the fuel cap. (HINT: When you want information on codes, it is usually wise to include the code number that you are getting - that way, it can be looked up, instead of GUESSING at what the problem is from a code description that some generic code reader is telling you..) DTC P0457 is defined by SAE J2012 as "Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (fuel cap loose/off)"
At this point, I am ASSUMING this is the code you got.
This DTC is set when the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects that there is an in-tank pressure drop that is more than 7in. H2O within 30 seconds directly after refueling, or there is excessive purge (fuel Vapor) flow more than .06 lbs. per minute. Possible causes are: > Fuel filler cap not installed after refueling > Fuel filler cap loose or cross-threaded
There are other malfunctions that can also cause this code to set, but it will be accompanied by other codes indicating other possible failures. If there are no other Evaporative Emissions System codes present, then there is most likely a problem with the way your fuel cap was put on the last time you got fuel.
Check your fuel cap and make sure it is on correctly and is tight.
code P1456 set when there's small leak in the fuel tank system.
Most known reason for P1456:
-Didn't tight fuel cap on until it click for more that 3 time after fueling up and drove the car too long with cap loose.
-or a bad gas cap.
I'll try tighting the gas cap.
clear check engine.
if code come back, replace gas cap and clear check engine light again.
I am not sure I understand what you are asking but I will tell you that is you have a faulty fuel cap or a leaking fule filler neck, this can cause a check engine light to come on. I have seen people leave the fuel cap too loose and the light come on then Screw it tight and the light goes off. Hope this helps
The old days of disconnecting the battery to make the light go out are long gone, It must be reset with a scan tool so try this go to advance auto and have them put it on a scan tool to find out what the codes are then have them clear the codes. If the light comes back on after that you may have to replace the fuel cap. I hope this helps you.
P0420=Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1, The air filter is not the cause here, this is just a code saying your converter is not doing its best,
On most newer car the reason the evap system light come on is because the gas cap was not closed tightly. Also do not top off when fueling because this will ruin the evap system. What the eveporative sytem does is to make sure gasoline fumes don't go into the atmosphere. It basically sucks the fume from the gastank into the engine along with the regular combustion. First make sure the gas cap is good. If it is old replace it with a new one. Close it tightly. You may have to disconnect the battery to reset the code. If the code never came back again then it is fixed.
was the CEL on and fuel cap light on before you had the fuel pump replaced? if it was after the repairs were performed, double check all evaporative emissions lines, hose, and connection on and around the fuel tank. also make the the fuel filler neck is properly seated and clamped to fuel tank. if all good, check the plastic fuel filler top (just behind fuel door, where you put fueling nozzle) make sure it is not chipped or cracked anywhere. especially where the rubber seal from the cap rides.
