Engine light is blinking and the car runs rough, not enough power.

I have a 2000 v6 Taurus. I have had the electrical system checked out and it is good. The engine light comes on blinking at times and the car runs rough, like it it is not getting enough gas or spark. I had the air filter changed 6 mons. ago. and it is still good. I can still drive the car but I have to step on the gas pedal harder to induce more power from the engine. When the engine light stops blinking the car runs fine.
When I took the car into the shop, they couldn't fine the problem, the car wasn't driving rough.

You shouldn't have taken the car back, nor should the shop given you the vehicle,if you were willing to have it properly repaired.
The MIL Light is an indication of an issue or two and you said it runs rough and has no power. What more does a shop need. Repair it.

Is the Fuel Filter fairly new
Did they Clean the MAF Sensor, and make sure your air filter cover is on correctly, and you have no vacuum leaks.
They can look at all sensor data and resolve this ,if they wanted to.

Your owner's manual informs you that a blinking MIL(Engine light) means that your car is misfiring and needs to be serviced immediately, before more damage is done to the catalytic converter, which could cause a fire.

You and I know that, but hardly anyone has an
owners manual and refuse to buy one.
    Good point on the misfires

2000 taurus. rough idle when stopped check engine light blinks and car derates. when you accelarate runs good

This sounds like a MAP sensor. Have it scanned for the codes to make sure. Your mechanic can do this orany Ford Dealer for 75 - 100.00. I'm 98% sure this is a MAP sensor problem. Any questions please feel free to ask. Chris J.C. Towing

Runs rough on startup

Run in to autozone, pep boys, or other major autoparts store & they will usually do a free code scan for you. Once you know code, easier & better/cheaper to fix, than guessing & replacing parts that are fine.

Runs rough

How long have you had this problem? It could just be a bad tank of gas. Other things to check:
1. fuel pump and filter
Could be running on only 5 cylinders due to
2. spark plugs/wires
3. plugged fuel injector
Any problems with electrical? Like lights dimming at same time as running rough?
4. could be bad alternator putting excessive load on engine.
