Sorry, I now believe it to be OIL Temp. gauge

This appears to be a follow up of a question I answered earlier. Posting follow ups here doesn't work because each question has no context the the others. You must have deleted the earlier one or you posted anonymously.

According to this, only the 2002 model had an oil temperature sensor.

Your best bet would be to download a manual so you are sure what this gauge ACTUALLY is. HERE it is

Top row: Oil Pressure - Battery Volts
Bottom row: Fuel Tank Level - Coolant Temperature

2005 GMC Envoy. What sensor do I need to change for temperature gauge please?

scan the ECT if it reads wrong most time the 17 year old thermostat is bad. stuck open, missing or those crazy fail safe stat gone wild.
ect 180 to 200f is normal .
if not thermostat is first. I used and IR gun to measure the stat hosing to see if its bad, 1minutes work,
most times the gauge never fails so we do 1simple test to prove that.
scan the PCM is first.

never seen a STaT good 17 year old,
had one that told near all day to hit 180f>?
when old that do nasty things, even stick closed and warp HEADS
why risk that, attack the stat.

Where is the location of the coolant temperature sensor on my 2004 gmc envoy, and what is the best way to get at it?

if you have a code for erratic thermostatic or coolant temp ,change the thermostat it is a known problem ...located under the alternater very hard to change make sure you get an acdelco or dealer part ;) assuming it is the in line engine

I have a 2003 GMC Envoy and the check engine light comes on peridically. Auto Zone checked it and Code 0128 was the alleged issue. However, where is the sensor? No one seems to know the location of the...

This code relates to low coolant temperature not the 02 sensors. You should change your thermostat, it's stuck open and is not allowing the engine to properly heat up.

By the way, there are 2 92 sensors on Envoys and Trailblazers. One of them upstream is in the engine compartment right off the exhaust manifold, easy to replace. The other one downstream is next to the transmission drain plug in the exhaust pipe.

Check engine light on - 2003 gmc envoy XL

That code represents a lower than expected reading for temperature (coolant). First thing to do is check your coolant level, as if it is low, then the sensor can not read correctly. Second, you may have a thermostat that is stuck open, allowing the coolant to cool off too much. The sensor should be mounted on top of the engine, near the thermostat housing.
