Cut the outer hood release cable sheath (under the dash) back to expose the inner wire cable, then using a pair of locking pliers (Vise Grips) pull on the inner release cable while another person pushes down over the latch area of the hood to relieve pressure on the latch and make it easier to open, the hook is released lubricate the hood latch and hood latch striker with white Lithium Grease (AKA "Lubriplate")
there should be a lever that is on the bottom edge of dash that is under the steering wheel along the trim. if the handle is broken you can use pliers to grab the cable and pull it to get the hood to realse. if you found all that and i seems to work ok then when pulling the release lever have a friend hit or shake the hood to get it to pop up a little so that you can open it all the way.
Sounds like the latch is slightly out of adjustment. Have someone pull up on the hood edge while you release the hood from inside.
Once open, spray some white lithium grease on both components of the hood latch.
The latch strike bolts usually have slotted holes to allow for adjustment. If you loosen them slightly, and then close the hood, it should align itself, then open the hood carefuly and retighten the bolts..
IF you cannot get the hood open, chances are the cable is loose from the release, and you may have to remove part of the grille to access the underside of the latch to replace the cable.
I would have someone hold the hood release latch while bumping the front of the hood to try to bump the hood loose. Once opened, be sure to lubricate the hood latch under the hood and also lubericate the safety latch as well to prevent this in the future. Use white lithium grease to lube all latches. Be sure to work the latch a couple dozen times after lubricating a few times before closing the hood to ensure it is working properly.
The red release latch is down under the dash on the extreme left hand side. A release tongue should stick out from the radiator grill when the latch is opened. Pulling on this tongue will release the hood
When you open the hood the angle is initially restricted to about 45 degrees which is fine for minor jobs. If you need extra room, the left hand hinge has a latch pin which can be swung inwards to allow the hood to move up to about 50 degrees. Releasing the second latch pin on the right hand hinge allows the hood to go vertical. You will have to release the left hand hinge latch pin to close the hood.
Saturn Vue hood release can be opened (if the cable is not broken) by disconnecting the cable from the back of the release lever, grabbing the ball on the end of the cable with some large pliers ("channel locks") and pulling hard. A metal "wire keeper" bracket clamped to the cable end under the hood to serve as a spacer and the release lever works. The purpose of this bulletin is to provide a procedure for opening the hood on the Saturn VUE and ION vehicles should the hood latch release cable mechanism become inoperative. VUE Hood Opening ProcedureModify the Saturn radio antenna by bending the antenna mast 1 in. (2.54 cm) above the antenna base to a 25 degree angle Open hood of similar vehicle to locate hood latch release cable to hood latch attachment point. Using modified antenna, note approximate location that antenna will have to enter in between fascia and hood to access the hood latch cable attachment point. This should be toward the left edge of the Saturn emblem. Also note position of the modified antenna base. It should be angled downward. Note: Use protective tape on the hood and fascia where the antenna will be inserted to protect the surfaces from scratches On vehicle with inoperative latch, insert antenna between hood and fascia and depress the hood latch cable until the hood is opened.
Try pulling on the hood release, while someone else lifts the hood. If this doesn't work. You can access the underside of the hood release by taking the front grille out. If you look closely you'll see the retainer screws that can be removed from the front. Once the grille is out or loosened enougt to get your hand in behind, you can release the hood latch from the underside with a screwdriver and then repair the hood latch after you've opened it.
it can be unbolted, but it sounds like your primary latch could be giving you problems. have some one play with the hood release (pushing and pulling) while you release secondary latch and pull up on hood. if you get it open spray all moving parts with wd40.
Ok, open the door, stand next to the door, pull the hood release while slapping your hand on the hood or have someone else lift the front edge while you pull on the latch..... should get in...
