What kind of Freon does a 1989 Toyota use. And if you are doing it yourself do you have to buy a certain adaptor?
Buy a retro fit valve for 9 bucks on ebay, then 35 bucks for new freon at walmart and go on your way. If it does not work, you need to replace the ac system anyway and probably won't, like I did not, and just drive with no ac.

You should have R12 freon in a 1990 but you can put R134 freon into that system the only problem your going to have is the adapter for R12 is different from R134 after you get the adapter you need to put the freon in the low pressure valve not the high pressure, you will know which one because the adapter only fits the low pressure valve which is located on your AC lines under your hood, theres a little cap thats either blue or black you unscrew. You can't buy r12 anymore because its not good for enviorment so buy R134. you can buy at any parts store for like $5 to $10.

Hi!!
Unfortunately, the R-12 refrigerant that your compressor used was phased out on 1994. You will need to an Automotive A/C Shop to have the system evacuated, flushed, vacuumed, retrofitted and charged with R134a refrigerant. This job requires the use of specialized equipment and according to EPA regulations must be performed by a licensed HVAC Technician.
Once your system was retrofitted, if you ever need to re-charge refrigerant. All autoparts carry easy to use, instructions included, R134a refrigerant recharge kits.
Good Luck!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

you actually need R-12 buy you can not buy this with out a refrigerant licens and it runs about $130 a pound i would suggest taking it to a car shop of your choice and have it retrofited over to 134-a wich any one can buy and it only costs $8 a pound
