Coolant leak in 2000 Volvo V70 XC AWD with turbo

After returning from a 2 week holiday i drove my 2000 Volvo V70 XC AWD with turbo on the highway... 30 minutes later the temperature gauge rocketted to the red zone. I pulled over, topped it up with 50:50 antifreeze, got home.. bled the system.
Next day i changed the thermostat, bled the system. A week goes by and the 'low radiator' light show up on the dashboad. I top it up...

No drops of coolant fluid show up on my garage floor.

I occasionally smell the rad fluid on a cold day in my heating, could it be the heater core? If so, is there a test ? Is there a resource that can show me how to access the heater core to evaluate if I need to replace it? Any help is most welcome.
Cheers all.

Yes, good points.. the oil is perfectly fine so i do not suspect a head gasket (thank goodness). No condition codes or warning lights on dashboard.
The front floor mat is dry.

Hmmm any other ideas.. is there a pressure test that one can connect to id a leak??

I found that the change of thermostat has resolved much of the loss, however i have also noticed the smell of coolant when i start the car or rallaye the car sharply on a street.

Can someone point me to a great site that explains with pictures how to replace the heater core in this beast. Summer is here so a bit of grease monkey work is timely.
Cheers to all helpers on this matter, truly appreciated.

Have you checked to make sure its not leaking into your oil. most heater core leaks will be on the front floor of the passenger side of the car.

I had a similar problem and eventually the leak got worse. Turned out it was the heater core but was leaking on the opposite side so I never had leakage on the driver's side floor. I had the heater core replaced and that fixed the coolant smell while running the AC or heat but I'm still losing small amounts of coolant. It has been suggested that it might be a head gasket or a cracked head. My oil is OK and I haven't noticed white smoke in the exhaust so I'm doubtful. Still, no dripping and loss of coolant only from driving, nit sitting. And it's running rough after new plugs and ignition coils.

My 1999 xc v70 awd volvo wagon has a rear brake getting hot

the first thing you want to check is whether or not it has a heavy drag at the wheel caused by wrong pads, sticking caliper, improperly installed parts. Lift the car and try to turn the wheel. Just because they are certified does not mean they know everything. I'm certified too, but I also have experience with euros and the quality of parts that need to be used. If inferior quality parts are used it will cause this. It can create all kinds of problems and noises. Take it back until they get it right. Ask them what brand of parts they use. Let me know and if they give you any grief, contact me and I will advise accordingly.

Have a Volvo V70 XC AWD 2000. P0422 code comes up "efficeincy below threshold". Just replaced the Cat with an after market unit. Code comes back after resetting and driving for 30 miles. Car has 135K miles...

you can do that since you already replace the cat, however the problem may be some where else like maf sensor, intake leaks faulty plugs, coils or fuel injectors

Oil spray onto underside of cat...v70 2.4 turbo AWD. Possibly turbo oil return pipe, oil seperator is part of block........not the external black one.

there is a seal on t hr breather box that could be leaking if there is oil across the oil pan if it is only on underside of car then the turbo return is leaking that is most common probably 10 dollars for gasket and seal and easy to change

Volvo V70 xc AWD '98 - fuel filter change

Brandonlo168,

The fuel filter can be located under the carpeted cargo storage floor at the rear of the wagon. Remove the four 10mm bolts, remove the cover. You will then see a removeable plate to the right just behind the rear passenger seat. Fuel filter can be seen through hole in hole. Replaced from underneath wagon. Be sure to make sure lines are fully inserted onto filter. Check for leaks. No smoking, extinguisher handy. Note arrow on filter for correct fuel flow.
