It sounds like you have an air leak on the intake manifold. If it runs ok at high idle(no Missing put your hand over the exhaust pipe to check for the miss) then intake leak is high suspect.

my truck didn't do the crazy idling so much but it was running a little rough before it finnally died. it just wouldn't start back up. i changed the fuel filter i could hear the fuel pump working i finnally pulled a spark plug out and realized it wasn't getting spark. after hooking a computer module up under the dash it told me that the camshaft position sensor was out. the sensor is integrated into the distributor therefore you have to change the distributor to replace the sensor. hope this helps some, i'm actually trying to fix mine tomarrow

try disconnecting the MAF (mass airflow sensor) - it is located after the air filter, usually a black box in the intake tube. Could also be the IAC valve which monitors the engine temp, that can be disconnected but will cause high idle if removed, dont know where it is on your car though.
If the MAF is faulty, disconnecting it will make the car idle and run again, but will generate a CEL (check engine lamp) on the dash just because the MAF is not seen by the ecu, but it will run on a default map till you get another one fitted.

No, like others said, there's an access plate under the rear seats. Most imports (Honda, Toyota, Nissan) have this access plate to get to the pump. Some domestics don't (90's Camaros etc)
