Well the first thing is to check all your fuses, then i would take a look under the hood for any broken or disconnected vacuum lines, this is what i would check first, hope this is helpful.

I have had several problems with my cruise control on my 2001 Montero Sport 2wd 3.0 engine. First the cruise control light would come on but would no engage. This turned out to be a cracked vacuum line. When the vaccuum line was changed it worked fine. A year later the cruise control would engage but would not disengage when the brake was applied. I could on;y disengage the cruise cintrol by shutting off the switch. When this problem occured my break lights where not working. Once I replaced the break light swich located on top of the break pedal arm everything worked. fine. The cruise contro is tied into this switch. These switches run about $30.00 and are easy to replace.
