no engine told at all ? and is and engine problem, hmmmmm1
suburban 1500 or 2500 HMMMMMMM2
1500 is 5.3L v8,
2500 has 2 engines , USA answers me.
so always starts cold engine but not hot.
lots of causes that, (huge in fact) I use 20 tools to find it (upto)
doing work tool (meter) free is not fun, cheap or good for down time.
- that is called hot soak. failure (spark or fuel mostly)
- or engine is flooding.
when any old car fails to start (cranks robust)
we use the WOT trick( in the users guide)
hold throttle pedal to the floor, (this cuts injectors dead) and crank
this clears the flood and now it can start.
no starts (macro) list first , then micro last
- bad engine, or cat melted or EGR stuck open (I guess not )
- bad spark , cant burn gas lacking spark x8
- bad fueling too much or too little.
the micro list and tests are huge. but lets skip the engine list.
and to top caused.
spark, good spark plugs. and all spark related parts that age fast
those (aka tune up for 80yeasr) and 8 coils and 8 spark wires to fail.
we test spark carefully and spark plugs and this 8 HV wires. love to fail this old.
now fueling, fuel pressure too high or low, even bad FPR, the fuel pressure regulator sure can fail 18 years old
leaking or partials block injector or even intermittant.
a shop does Injector leak down test to find all that using a TOOL.
now the easy find, saved for last.
you beg, barrow, buy or rent a SCAN TOOL, USA OBD2.
and plug it in to the knee jack 16pins(DLC)
and scan the PCM as you crank a dead engine.
and release the key after 5 or 10 sec max cranked,
not KEY OFF now.
and see the scan tool do its magic, DTC errors
like P03xx for bad spark bad CKP bad CMP.
or other hard fails, low numbers P0xxx are more important./
in fact the Full list of DTC errors is considered, now. if present./
if car will not start hot.
we can do the WOT test above
or use Instant start in a spray can.
or pull a spark plug and read the tip.
soaked in fuel, oil , or green antifreeze or carbon or the gap is way to wide ,one can use hat rim to fit there? oops.
our using those TRASH GAP-LESS plugs. no use J-plugs.
use OEM spec plugs only, up to platinum.
or at the stall so a fast spark test, using timing light or a test spark plug.(100 year way I call this. google testings spark)
a good choice. plugs
NGK 3186 {TR5GP} G-Power; Pre-Set Gap: 0.040"
8 IGN coils easy for 1 to fail and make starts hard, test spark on all 8.
