if its been sat for years the fuel filter has probably deteriorated, and its now in the fuel lines. there is a number of parts that need changing before you start an engine that has not been run in a long time. fuel drained, fuel filter changed, oil and filter changed. fuel goes off after a year or 2. oil can turn to sludge in the sump. and block the oil pump. this can also affect the oil pressure sensor.

I had the same problem. My car sat for a few days and when i went to start it i heard an extremely loud pop (kind of like a backfire). After that it would start and sound fine, but die 2 seconds later. Thank god my bf is a mechanic he knew instantly that the pcv valve hose that connects to the intake manifold unplugged itself. He plugged it back in and it runs fine now. I didnt however get a check engine light, but i only tried to start it twice before he fixed it because i was scared it jumped time.
depending on how old the vehicle is,it may be a bad modulator valve on the transmission,or just a clogged vacum line to the modulator valve on the transmission. please be specific with year, make and model, but i gave you diagnostic for 89 trhu 99 for most models anyway, research what year, make model of your vehicle.some want to blow smoke and say bad electrical module.do your research 1st beause transmission shops are gonna say replace the transmission to replace the issue. beware the trans shops that use 'god' for logo.some are great, others are ****. ask for a list of customers, and stand in line at those shops for disgruntled customers.do your research, angie's list.com is one way of finding out who does great work. wish you the best.
YOU NEED TO START WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ADVANCE AUTO PARTS DOES IT FOR FREE MOST SHOPS ARE CAPABLE OF LOOKING UP THE CODE AND TELLING YOU WHAT IT IS
