To fix this, you have to drop the gas tank to access it. You will want to run it low on gas so it's not as heavy to deal with. Then depressurize the fuel system by removing the fuel pump relay, and starting the car. It should run for a second and die. Take the straps loose that hold the tank up, and lower it enough that you can access the filler neck and overflow hoses to take them off. Lower the tank enough that you can disconnect the fuel lines and the connectors for the fuel level and fuel pump. You should then be able to pull the tank out. If your car has around 100,000 miles, or more, you may want to replace the pump at this point while you're at it. If you get a new pump, it comes with a new sender as well, and since you're doing the same thing for both, it makes one less trip into the tank. You will have to remove the locking ring, which requires a punch and a hammer to remove. The pump and sender will then lift out. You can then remove the sender from the pump at this point, and put everything back together. You will probably want to empty any remaining gas into gas cans so it's not as heavy going back up.

2005 Chevy Malibu evap sensor won't go off after changing it. Recently had a fuel level system done on the tank.

evap sensor won't go off ? Do you mean the check engine light ? What DTC - diagnostic trouble code ? fuel leveler system done ,your funny ! Fuel gauge sending unit of fuel pump ? With the fuel nozzle shutting off like that, the air in the tank is causing that , which means there is a problem with the Evap vent solenoid or wiring to the vent solenoid . How do I replace the fuel sensor in my 2005 malibu

I know you may want to do this yourself...But there is a lot that can go wrong in the tank if it not re assembled correctly...I had someone work on my fuel system and claimed to replace the sensor..but he bent something and it ended up costing more money to fix his mistake..He bent something when he put it back to gether and I got no fuel pressure....Take your car to an honest mechanic and get it done right....I hope this was helpful..PEACE.....

I have a 2005 Malibu V6 LS. Whenever I fill the tank with fuel(completely full) the engine light comes on and stays on for a couple of days. This causes problems with my remote starter - it doesn't work...

your car has a fuel level sensor on the fuel pump which is in the gas tank that is going bad this makes your engine light come on also makes your gas gauge read faulty, I think you can buy the fuel level sensor seperate from the fuel pump but i am not for sure my wifes car does the same thing i just havent got around to fixing it yet but when i do i will repost and et you know.

Fuel gauge faulty / gives weird levels of fuel

The fuel level sensor is bad. The tank will have to be taken down to replace the level sensor. There is little fingers on the resistor that wear down and loose contact causing the gage to read incorrectly.

My 2005 malibu sometimes stalls for no reason while i'm slowing down for a light or pulling into aparking spot

If the check engine light has not come on you could still take it to an autoparts place and have them test your car. It is usually free. You may have a burned out indicator light. If your car has not set a error code there are several things to check. Low vacuum pressure caused by bad hoses, pcv valve, EGR diaphram, manifold gasket, or brake booster. Low idle rpm caused by above items or throttle position sensor, steering step-up switch or mechanical adjustment on throttle body. In extreme cases dirty air filter, water in gas, fuel pump pickup on low tank. Hope this helps.

Why would the gas gauge on a 2005 Chevy Malibu go from full to empty while driving when you know the gas tank is full?

This happens on mine, its got to do with the fuel sensor, I frequently fill up and sometimes keep fueling after the nozzle clicks. This is what caused my problem. I have since stopped fueling immediately after it clicks and have not had the problem. Make sure you arent over filling your tank
