I have a Ford Escort LX 95, looks almost exactly like the picture above. Unfortunately out of the blue it stopped starting up.
My car normally beeps (door ajar) when I open the door. Initially I can open the car, it beeps, I can turn on the lights, the hazards, etc. As soon as I put the key into the ignition and turn it, it will click once and then I lose all power for roughly six hours. No way to even get a click at this point, it's dead to the world until about six hours later at which point if I try to start the car again it does the same thing.
I already know it's not the battery because that was a piece I could easily check/have checked. Terminals are tight, no blown fuses so I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer.
Thanks in advance!
Battery needs renewing
its not the voltage its reserve amp hour capacity charge that the battery is holding ,it shows voltage ok but just about light a bulb up for a couple of minutes ,if you took it too the dealer where you bought it then they will tell you anything rather than pay out ,second hand car dealers are bigger rogues than solicitors or religious leaders ,next to them are politicians
Not sure if it posted. Unfortunately the whole battery has been replaced. Hooked it all up and no power at all at least initially. I'll post again if it does its usual 6 hours later letting current through. I realize there's the off chance I got a new battery that's bad too, but not sure at present.
Thanks!
was it a new battery ?? or another secondhand one ??
Brand new, came off the shelves with all the other new ones at Autozone. After a few hours the car returned to doing what it normally does. Open the door it beeps, emergency lights work, headlights work, etc. as soon as I turn the key in the ignition, I hear a single click. Then lose all power to everything for about 5 to 6 hours. Won't even click if you try to turn the key in the ignition again before that amount of time has elapsed.
Then it must have a connection problem with the wiring somewhere ?? again this is one of them faults that you need a mechanic to have a look at because it could be anything and everything ,from a faulty earth cable from the chassis to the engine to a very bad battery terminal where cables are all soldered into the terminal ,yes i can give you lot of suggestions but if you have no experiance of what to look for you could say its ok when it isnt ,but first i would try a jumper lead from the negative terminal direct to the engine and see what happens ,then one from the plus and run it straight to the starter and a small screwdriver from that terminal to the small starter solonoid terminal.must go customer has arrived

Usually answered in minutes!
I had taken it to the business where I got it and they checked it and said it was reading the right voltage. Can it read the right voltage and still require renewing? (Not doubting, I just don't know.)
Sad but true more than likely. Is there a way to bypass/test this before I go in demanding a replacement? Like perhaps trying to jumpstart the car or does the battery's condition preclude that from working?
Thanks a LOT for the help. I'm great with computers but relatively illiterate with cars.
