Question about Chrysler Sebring

1999 Chrysler sebring convertible; No spark to plugs. I think this vehicle is the Mitsubishi model of the sebring and I don't remember much about them. Could someone send an ignition system description and operation from a Chrysler manual and possibly a wire schematic for pcm to distributor. Thanks Greg

    My customer says engine backfired while driving (turning a corner at low speed) and it died,,,timing belt tensioner had collapsed and belt slipped about a 1/4 turn on rear cam (customer says another shop installed new belt 2 months ago vehicle does have new water pump (T belt driven), new belt and tensioner installed now. Fuel pressure is fine, ASD is OK I kind of feel you are right about replacing distributor W/Cap and rotor but I would like to make sure it is receiving all signals from controller (This economy SUCKS and I no longer have access to ALLDATA or MITCHELL wire diagrams) so could you possibly send me a diagram on this one.

    I used a Genisis scan tool and checked RPM while attempting to crank the engine ,,, RPM was reading 195 rpm so if its the same as a dodge truck or PT cruiser there is a crank signal being received by the PCM,,,,is this correct?

    Yes I thought the same but I still have no spark and the customer has limited funds so I am trying to find the exact problem ,,,coil, or just cap and rotor?

Its possible, if the ASD Relay (Auto Shutdown Relay) was bad, (wherever that's located on a 1999 Sebring Convertible) the fuel pump would never turn on. I can hear the fuel pump come on for about 2 seconds when I turn the key, and you need have about 50 lbs of fuel pressure. So the circuit relating to the ASD is fine.

Check if not getting a spark and the car does not have an external coil pack. The coil is actually located within the distributor, which is Also where the Cam Position Sensor is located. In other case, so we replaced the Distributor. Since the car has over 140k miles on it, we also replaced the Distributor Cap and Rotor, the Spark Plug Wires, and Spark Plugs, since we had the Intake Manifold removed and had access to the rear three plugs.

Engine started right up, after we got past the air pocket in the Fuel Rail; engine runs just fine now!

    I dont have this wire schematics or diagrams, but its possible that you can find other answer with a reader fault code. Try it.

    I suggest scanned the PCM (computer car) with OBD scanner reader, in order to know if some fault code is detected there,

How do you remove the plate over the back 3 spark plugs to change them on a 1998 sebring convertable

It's the intake manifold I would not try this if you don't know what parts are called.If you strip the threads out of the aluminum head you have a real big repair bill

Why ?

Have you tested the ignition system
& determined you have a bad wire

If not ,then what are the real issues
with your vehicle.

Wires last almost as long as the vehicle

Don't replace much but spark plugs,
until something fails

Exact location of the coil pack on a 99 sebring 2.5

I do not know the exact location on that vehicle but all you have to do is follow the spark plug wire. Where it ends is the coil pack.

replacing the fuel pump relay is one thing but what about the (ASD auto-shut down) relay

  • what transmission?
  • any codes?
  • does the pump run KOEO?
  • Do you have spark?
  • What is the cranking speed?

1999 Chrysler Sebring Convertible code P1495. I

Code 1495 = Leak Detection Pump Solenoid Circuit

Remove the connector from the solenoid (should be on the back wall, just to the drivers side of the air-hat). You will have the solenoid to check and the harness. What you want to measure is the voltage coming from the harness and the resistance of the solenoid.

Turn the key to the "ON" position but do not start the motor; the voltage at the connector should be at least 10V or more,.now, check the resistance of the solenoid (should be around 35 ohms).
