I am having the same issue, but it is not actually burning out the bulb, but burning the base of the bulb at the contact point. I have tightened it (pulled up on the tab) several times, but still keeps fouling out the bulb base. It is also the passenger side rear brake light.

Sometimes quality of the bulbs are suspect in these cases. Check all connections at the assembly for any corrosion or looseness. I believe these also had a problem with the brakelight switch just above the brake pedal. My guess would be the connection at the brake light assembly or the socket where the bulbs go in.

My 2006 VW Beetles rt. rear and high mounted brake light bulbs keep blowing out! Is the brake light switch recall a part of my 2006 beetle?

Does not make sense since your bulb voltage(s) are around 12-13 volts DC. If your voltage is on the high side that could result in bulb burnout prematurely but then why only are one set of bulbs affected?! Check for proper voltage parameters.

Maybe the bulbs you installed had weak filaments prone to early failure.

First just check the bulbs. You gain access to the bulbs from inside the trunk area, pull back any carpet in the way, the holder/socket should pop out with a quarter turn to get to the bulbs.

How do i change my rear indicator bulb in my 04 beetle?

open rear hatch and look strait down on inside boot well. the plastic trim has access holes that pop out on either side just behind the lights. pop out the access cover on the side with burnt bulb, then reach inside that hole and you will fins a large plastic "wingnut", unscrew it<careful not to drop it or you'll have to take the whole boot apart to retrieve it> after removing wingnut carefully pop out lens from outside , replace bulb and reinstall after testing
