Question about 1983 Mazda RX-7

1 Answer

My 1984 rx7 starts when choke is pulled out. WHen engine warms and choke pulls in it stalls out. when trying to start it back up the engine sounds like it's trying to start, and it does when I pull the choke out and hold it by hand. When let the choke go back in, it stalls out again. engine will not stay on. what would cause this problem??.

It does not hold at idle. once the choke goes in after it warms up it shuts off. Then when trying to crank it again it sounds like it's trying to start but it doesn't until I pull back on the choke. As soon as I release the choke it shuts back off again.

Acts like the choke is stuck closed it won't stay started and runs ruff until engine warms up then its fine. What do i do?

Well the choke has an electric part that heats up and makes the choke open in a few minutes. As soon as the engine starts the choke should open about 25 percent by way of a vac pull-off.
You can take the air cleaner off and watch the choke while someone starts the engine cold. If the choke does not open after it starts, check the choke pull-off. You can also open the choke with a screwdriver to see if the engine clears up.

94 jeep grand cherokee stalls after the first 5 min of operation

Sounds like the automatic choke is either binding or gone bad.

On a cold start, that's why the RPMs are bumped up for a few minutes...the choke is allowing the engine to warm up, before dropping the intake mix to normal "run" level.

However, should the choke remain closed once the engine is hot, the stalling will happen for lack of air.

The choke-control is mounted on top of the manifold, near the throttle cable-cam.
Look for a small (about 3" wide X 2" deep) cone-shaped metal can with a linkage to the throttle cam.

With the engine off, spray the linkage at both ends with Liquid Wrtench and work the linkage in and out of the can a few times to check for smooth operation.
You should feel slight back-pressure when you move the linkage toward the controller.
With the linkage pushed in, spray and wipe the exposed surface inside the controller body.

Allow the cleaner to dry for a few minutes (it's just oil, I know...but if you used a spray, the propellants could be flammable) and start the truck.
Allow it ti idle at least 5 minutes until the auto-choke pulls back on the throttle...then take a short ride around the block to see if that cured the stalling.

Have to stick screw driver down carb to open flappers to get started then the 1988 350 rins bad and if stalls it wont satrt again.

Your carburetor has an electrically controled choke thermostat. In addition to this you have what is known as a choke pull-off diaphram. this pull off over a peroiod of time wears through the rubber diaphram and it fails to open the choke the necessary amount to stop from choking the engine out completely. Now, during this failure your sparkplugs have become irreperably blackened with fuel soot and they cannot be cleaned. this is why once your engine warms up it will not run because fouled plugs will only fail when they are warm. You need to have your choke thermostat, your choke pull-off valve and your spark plugs checked and or changed.

My 1984 Ford F-150 V8 302 choke is not working?

Your choke should have a spring at the bottom under a little cover with a rod coming up and connecting to the butterfly for the choke. Usually this get a little corroded and sticks, you need to clean the pieces so that they rotate freely and the rod will move up and down. It is adjusted on some models by bending the rod to make it longer or shorter. When you push down the gas pedal for the first time in the morning it should set the choke, test this by opening the throttle while its cold out, once the throttle is opened the choke should close, once the engine is running there is a vacuum operated linkage that should pull it back some, until the engine is warm. Again if this worked before, its probably dirty so a good cleaning is in order. Hope this helps, let me know

Have a 1985 mazda rx7 will not idle .. cold start ok when choke is on once warm stalls and will not idle

There is a throtle adjuster right behind the carb. You can adjust it with a screw driver. If you are not sure where it is, just have someone press to gas pedal and you will see it move. RPM's at idle should be around 1,000 when it is idle once it has warmed up. Once that car warms up the choke moves back in and the car is probably stalling because it is not running enough RPM's.

1984 jeep cherokee stalling

That's a big IF, orv1979. I would go to Auto Zone and invest $20 in a Haynes repair manual so you can see where the filter is located on your vehicle. Also you will have other troubleshooting guides in the book that will help you in the future.
