My 1998 Ford Explorer runs rough under hard acceleration

My 1998 Ford Explorer has sat idle for several months and now when running, it pops and cracks and backfires under hard acceleration. It has new plugs and wires. It seems to idle smoothly. What should I check to get it to run better?

New plugs and wires?

Double check to make sure that you've got the routing and firing order right... if you have 2 switched, the car may still idle well but then pop and sputter on harder acceleration.

The next step would be to run some "Complete Fuel System Cleaner"... If that's the problem, you should see results within 20 miles or so.

My laser is idling rough, then when under throttle is is running very rough. I have changed the spark plugs as the old one were really filthy. Still has not solved the problem. Please help

Check the oxygen sensor for correct operation as it sounds like you are flooding the engine. The injectors are not getting the correct pulses from the cpu because it cannot correctly read the exhaust gas.

I have a 1998 Ford Explorer.. It starts but runs rough, I have to hold the accelerator pedal ultil it warms up then it's fine after 10-15 minutes.

There is about a 90% chance that if you replace your Idle Air Control Solenoid (IAC) your problem will go away. The other 10% could be many other things including a faulty Coolant Temperature Sensor, Mass Airflow or MAP Sensor, etc.

4.0 liter v 6 idles very rough

Rough idle is usually a symptom of a vacuum leak especially if the engine runs good at full acceleration. You have 14 year old vehicle, so check all under hood vacuum hoses.

Try running some fuel injector cleaner through your fuel tank. What you may have are a couple of plugged or missfiring fuel injectors. I would suggest checking all of your wiring to your injectors to insure good connection, replace your fuel filter and check for vacuum leaks.

no problem. If you are getting that low of voltage on a load then you might want to test the alternator as well to make sure it is running at capacity.
