It's not the ignition switch that is bad it is the ignition lock cylinder. We are likely both thinking the same thing, the part that the key goes in, but when you go to get another one it is the ignition lock cylinder.

Ignitions locked key won't turn

Try your spare key to see if it helps any. Make sure the steering wheel is not hard locked while turning the ignition. Try gently moving the steering wheel while trying to turn the ignition. Sometimes a spray of wd-40 in the cylinder will help

2000 monte Carlo ignition is stuck in off wont turn

How many times must you post the same question? Have you insured you are using the correct key? If so, spray WD-40 or similar into lock, put key in and out several times, wiggle, respray and keep trying. Try turning the steering wheel slightly back and forth as you do this. Good luck, you may have to disassemble if a part inside broke.

04 trailblazer cannot turn key to start it

It can be faulty ignition lock cylinder. I suggest to wiggle the steering wheel a bit and see if the key turns to start mode. If that is not helping then first turn steering wheel to right and try , or next turn steering wheel to left and see if you can turn the key.

----------

Spray wd-40 in the ignition key hole and let it remain there for few minutes, after that once again try to turn the key and see if that helps.

---------

But if that is not helping then ignition lock cylinder has to be removed out and inspected.

Ignition locked on a 2000 Dodge intrepid

If you any other spare key, try with that key and see if it turns the ignition to unlock position.Try to turn the steering wheel to left and key to right side and try turning key to left an steering wheel to right side, try both ways and see if the key unlocks ignition. If that is not helping then try to wiggle the steering wheel and then insert key to unlock ignition. If that is also not helping then get wd-40 spray and spray the lubricant into key hole, and then let the spray remain there for few minutes then insert key in the key hole and see if it unlocks the ignition.------ If not then its problem with tumblers in the ignition switch, it has to be checked. For that ignition switch has to be removed and inspected. If ignition switch is inspected ok, then ignition key lock cylinder is faulty, it has to be replaced.Once the ignition switch is removed, the key lock cylinder can be accessed.----------- Getting this troubleshooting tried and this possibilities checked will help, thanks.Helpmech.

Ignition has locked and the key won't turn

Try spraying some kind of lubricant in the key hole (WD-40, etc.). Push the key in and out of the ignition switch several times to move the lubricant around. Then, while trying to turn the key, wiggle the steering wheel back and forth. You might have to wiggle pretty hard. If it still doesn't work, you may have to replace the ignition lock assembly.

My ignition wont turn ... even if I wiggle the steering wheel. Could it be frozen??

if you have something like WD-40 that you could spray in the key slot,to try to free up sticking tumbler in the switch,And if you have another key to try,you can wiggle the key going in up and down a little then respray then rekey ,you'll see alot of black residue coming out when you remove the key, just wipe it off each time.

Ignition stuck in lock position

First, lubricate the key cylinder by spraying wd-40 into it -- this usually frees it.

You can also move the steering wheel back and forth while wiggling the key -- sometimes the steering wheel lock binds the key cylinder.

If this works, you can follow up the wd-40 lubrication with graphite lock lubricant (Pep Boys).

If lubrication doesn't work, let me know, we'll go to the next step.

2003 Ford Focus ZX5 Steering Wheel column locked...key goes in but does not start the car....can't move wheel... Wheel is not straight....will not move even if jimmed..car totally locked....up..

All you need is two inexpensive things to fix this. 1. Hammer and 2. WD-40. First, put the key in the ignition and tap it with the hammer. (this should unlock the steering wheel and the iginition) Second, spray some WD-40 in the key opening on the ignition, then put the key in again and proceed to tap it some more with the hammer. (WHEN I SAY TAP THE HAMMER I DO NOT MEAN HIT IT WITH FULL FORCE)... Any who keep put WD-40 and tapping it until you can turn the key without the help of the hammer... (should be at least 4 times) THE PROBLEM IS THAT WITH TIME DEBRI BUILDS UP IN THE IGNITION, AND THIS CAUSES THE STEERING TO LOCK UP WHEN YOU PLACE THE KEY IN THE IGNITION. THE HAMMER UNLOCKS THE SPRINGS IN THE IGNITION AND THE WD-40 CONVERTS THE DEBRI TO LIQUID SO IT CAN CLEAN THE IGNITION...
