If you're just dropping the trans pan of an AUTOMATIC transmission;
about 5 quarts. If you mean the entire transmission, its more like 10
quarts. If it's a MANUAL trans, it's a little under 2 quarts.

I have same engine/trans. Took to garage for fluid change. They had no idea how much, so they added too much. Answer: make sure car is flat, find a plug/screw on drivers side of transmission, about 8 inches up. This will drain excess fluid and leave you with the correct amount. Make sure car has run for about 5 minutes and you shift through all the gears a few times.
I have a 1997 cavalier, the automatic transmission pan gasket is leaking. there is no dipstick just a small filler cap. so after i replace the gasket and filter. is 5 guarts to little or to much.
