I was driving my 2003 kia spectra and it just quit. It kind of acted like it was running out of gas then just quit. When I tried to start it it made a sound that I have never heard before. Not a clunk, not like a dead battery, or the clicking like the starter.
I had the same thing happen in my 89 mazda mx6 and it turned out i had to replace the spark plugs and battery and it worked fine, maybe this will help you out
