Hello, I have a '78 Ford F-150 Ranger. There will need to replace rear seal on engine. The shop manual (Chilton) said that it will need to remove the engine from truck to do that. I just wonder is there any way to replace the seal without remove engine from truck? Need your tips or help. Thanks.

Another way is to loosen the motor mounts. Take off the oil pan. May have to jack up the engine or lift it up with a cherry picker to get the pan to clear the cross member. Then you should be able to remove the old seal and install a new one.

My car has a worn out engine rear seal how can I replace it?

This is a fun one. You can do this 2 different ways. One of which, remove the transmission and flexplate (automatic trans.) or flywheel (manual trans.) and you can loosen the rear main cap and pull the old rear main seal out and install the new one. The other way of replacing it is removing the engine and replacing the seal on an engine stand. Either way, it'll take some time to do.

Changing rear axle seal on 78 ford f150. looking for diagram.

You probably have the 9 inch differential. If it is a rear wheel seal remove the tire and wheel assembly. Be sure to use a jack stand so you don't have the vehicle fall on you. Remove the 4 retaining bolts that hold the backing plate onto the housing. Pull the axle from the axle tube. It may be stubborn at removal. If it is the pinion seal remove the drive line. Remove the pinion nut that rests inside the yoke. Try to use an impact tool for easy removal. Once the nut is off the yoke willcome off. You may need a puller to help in removal. One the yoke is off remove the pinion shaft seal. Replace with a new seal. install the yoke and the washer and then the pinion nut. Re-torque the pinion nut to 150 foot pounds.

Rear main seal

rear main seals come two different ways, a one piece (requires removal of the transmission, and two piece (requires removal of the oil pan, I recommend that you get a Haynes or Chilton Manual, and follow the steps listed inside for replacement, they are too many to post here. You can also check your local library for a repair manual, they may have one you can check out or copy for free. Hope this helps, let me know

Rear main seal is leaking on a Ford Mustang 2003 V-6

In order to replace the rear main seal u have to pull the transmission out to access it, u will need a special seal installer tool to install the new rear main "full circle seal", it u don't use the special ford tool the seal will leak again, also if there is a groove worn ion the crankshaft the crank must be repaired or replaced or the or the seal will leak again, so this is avery diff job, a 9 on the scale of 1-10 with 10 being the mos difficult.

1987 ford ranger 2.9 leaking oil

Hello, this is probaly your rear main seal on the back of your crankshaft. I would check and see if it is a two piece or a one piece main seal. You sound like a knowledable mechanic so this would not be to heard if you have taken a oil pan gasket off a ranger. I have a ranger and did an oil pan in a parking lot without jacking it up and removing the motor and shock like the manual says so I know that takes some skill. So, look up the seal in your Haynes or Chilton Auto Manual and I would replace this seal. Oil near your starter and the back of the oil pan is a classic sign of a rear main seal. Now, to get the seal in out you can refer to your manual and just remember to torque your rear main bearing cap to the proper torque when your done and also try to clean the bottom of your oil sump screen while your down there that would be a benefit later on. A tip to get a stuck seal out is to take an old wire tester the one that looks like an ice pick; this can push out a stuck rear oil seal very easily. I hope this helps your problem and I wish you the best of luck. If you have any other questions just email me ok.

Rear main seal oil leak on 3.0 v6 ford ranger/ qiuck fix??

You can do this at home, but you will need to remove the transmission to gain access to the rear main seal. The seals in the newer engines are a one piece seal, and the only way to replace them is to remove the tranny and the flywheel or flex plate to gain access to the retaining cover to the seal. A lot of work. But, if you can do it yourself you will save yourself lots of money. Labor to perform this repair will be high as it requires more time to assemble and disassemble than to actually replace the seal itself.
