97 civic 5spd. Jumping while accelerating.

Can anyone tell me what is wrong when I try to accelerate my car will jump/shake? The acceleration is slow and the RPMs will jump up by 300-500 RPMs each time it jumps. It's a 5 speed. I was told by a friend that it might be the torque converter. I haven't been able to put fluids in for a few months so I haven't been driving it a lot.

Just check the transmission fluid-if low you have to add until it is full-do not overfill though. Better to have it just a bit low than overfilling it.
In park, can you accelerate to 2500-3000 rpm, and hold steady with no shaking or indications of a miss? If it runs good in park or neutral, then you probably have transmission problems. Frankly, it is pretty rare for a torque converter to develop a problem. Check your fluid, or try changing the fluid if it is dark or dirty looking.

Your timming belt has jumped a tooth.Remove the covers and check that all teeth are ok.Then tighten or change the timming belt.I would fit a new timming belt.Has it is costly when they fail.Good luck.pippall.

97 civic ex auto with 40k miles. Under slow acceleration, upshifts are 'lazy' with engine speeding up for a few 'moments' before shift is completed. More brisk acceleration delivers better or normal...

A '97 with only 40k ? Wow ! Sounds like a transmission issue. I would begin with changing the transmission fluid and filter. If that didn't work, I'd take it to a transmission shop because there isn't much you can do on your own with a transmission due to their inherent complexity.
