1999 grand cherokee won't shift out of first with gas light on

This morning my 1999 jeep grand cherokee 4.0 gas light and check engine light came on and the transmission wouldn't shift past second gear. I put some gas in to get home and then the transmission was fine, although the check engine light is still on. This happened the other day as well, the tranny wouldn't shift past second gear with the gas light on. What could be wrong?

You need to have the vechicle scanned for codes.I believe you are going to limp in mode on the computer.Have them check all codes,transmmission and body along with engine.

Are you in Limp Mode? Is the Check Engine Light on?

Some ideas here including pulling fuses. You probably need an auto electrician though.

I recomended you to go to the dealer or a mechanic
this can a vehicle specialy the grand Cherokee it is famous for
problems in Motor or transm.
But you can make some mechanic if you don't know how to doit
to inspec the transmision filter.

If it were me, I would try replacing the pressure switch and see if that fixed it.
I looked it up and it appears that switch may be deep inside the transmission, which might mean it costs big bucks to replace it.

check intake manifold air temp sensor and engine coolant sensor...one may be out of range but not enough to turn on dash light. tests and specs can be found in chiltons or haynes, test is done with digital multi-meter.

This could be an issue with the shift solenoid , but can also be caused by low fluid due to a leak, check your fluid. Is there a check engine light on, if there is it could be a solenoid issue.
