I would say 4 seconds would be max on a bad day.
If it were my car I would try some WD 40 sprayed on to and around the linkage of the carburetor and work that linkage a little. It sounds like the choke is not completely closing when it needs to be or is not opening all the way up after it warms. Just a thought. Also you may want to check the air filter to see if it needs replaced. Good Luck, The Raz
Raz - This is a 2007 RAV4 Sport with 3.5l V6 fuel inhection. There is no carburetor nor a linkage for the choke. You are correct to say check the air filter though.
Yeah, I thought about that later if it was fuel injected. You should not have to pump the gas peddal when starting it at anytime, cold or hot...
The fuel filter could also be getting plugged if it wasn't the air filter.
You could take it off and blow through it the opiset direction of the flow. Take a paper towel and put in your hand when you blow through it to catch any debree so you can see if it had any gunk in it.
On these models there is also a valve that is suposed to open when you turn the key on for the fuel pump to pump the gas. Try turning the key to the on position and let it set a second or two before you try to start it. Thiswill give the fuel pump time to add the gas. And last but least you may want to give it a full tune up. Spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor. The spark plug wires should still be good. I hope these ideas helps you out. Good Luck, Raz
